Jesse Watters Freaks Out Over a Lesbian Kiss in “Lightyear” – Slippery Slope or Storm in a Teacup?

On Tuesday, Fox News host Jesse Watters appeared visibly unsettled as he discussed the 2022 digitally animated children’s film Lightyear. The source of his distress? A brief scene featuring a lesbian couple sharing a kiss — a mundane representation of reality that, in Watters’ view, constitutes a “slippery slope.”
Watters’ commentary followed remarks made last month by rapper Snoop Dogg, who said on a podcast that he “didn’t come in for this shit” after seeing the same scene in the movie. Dogg expressed concern that the kiss would force him to explain the romantic act to his inquisitive grandson, sparking a broader debate over representation in family entertainment.

During Tuesday’s segment on The Five, Watters elaborated on his apprehensions. Co-host Jessica Tarlov, the lone liberal voice on the panel, pushed back by highlighting research around a Cheerios ad featuring an interracial family. “I think it is a good thing to have children who are being born today, like my kids, won’t notice there’s a Black dad and a white mom in that ad, versus when I was growing up, that I would be like, ‘Oh, that’s different than what I typically see,’” Tarlov explained.
Tarlov went on to emphasize that same-sex couples, whether male or female, should be normalized for children. “You can be comfortable with the fact that there are two men kissing or two women kissing. I’m not saying you need to go deep into their bedroom and what’s going on there, but I don’t see what’s so offensive about that. There are gay couples all around us,” she said.
Watters, seemingly perplexed, focused on the female couple. “Lesbians?” he asked. When Tarlov clarified that she meant all same-sex couples, he nodded and replied, “OK. That’s what I wanted to hear.”
The discussion quickly devolved into heated crosstalk. Fox News contributor Tyrus chimed in, stating he doesn’t even want to see “a straight couple kissing in a cartoon.” Tarlov attempted to engage with the argument, but co-host Dana Perino indignantly interrupted. “It’s a cartoon!” she exclaimed. Meanwhile, co-host Paul Mauro jumped in to ask, “What about trans?”

The exchange grew even more chaotic. Tarlov tried to reason through the example of Sleeping Beauty, noting that the titular character was asleep — not dead, as Tyrus insisted. Mauro then stated, “The problem is trans is next,” signaling the predictable spiral of slippery slope arguments.
Watters, undeterred, doubled down on his position. “It’s a slippery slope, Jessica,” he said, reinforcing the panel’s already tense atmosphere.
This is not the first time the conservative pundit has made headlines for policing social norms. In previous segments, Watters has shared his personal rules for what “real men” should or shouldn’t do — from using a straw, helping a spouse buy groceries, to editing pictures with Photoshop — all framed as part of a rigid vision of masculinity.
The incident sparked immediate reaction on social media, with viewers expressing disbelief, amusement, and outrage in equal measure. Critics called Watters’ comments over-the-top and reactionary, while supporters praised him for “defending traditional values.” The debate highlights a broader cultural conversation: how children’s media represents diverse families, relationships, and identities, and what role conservative commentary should play in those discussions.
Ultimately, the segment revealed more about Watters’ worldview than the movie itself. While Lightyear features a simple kiss meant to reflect real-world diversity, the response underscores the contentious terrain of representation in media today.
