A star of Netflix docuseries Girls Incarcerated has tragically died aged just 25 after being shot by police. Hannah Aberegg, a mother of two, died in South Bend, Indiana, on 6 May following a confrontation with officers. Her mother had called for a welfare check on the young woman, who was experiencing a medical episode, but when police arrived at the scene, she allegedly produced a handgun.
A South Bend officer then opened fire on Hannah during a stand-off at a petrol station. The incident was initially attended by South Bend police and St Joseph County police, before Indiana State Police arrived following the fatal shooting.
Sergeant Ted Bohner from the Indiana State Police said in a statement: “The Indiana State Police continues to investigate the officer-involved shooting that took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

“These investigations typically take several weeks to complete. While this may seem like a long time, it is needed to do a thorough and accurate investigation. That is what the public and all involved parties deserve.
“Our role in this incident is to seek facts through all means necessary. We do not make determinations on these incidents. That is the role for the Prosecutor’s Office.”
“Some facts that some in the community either overlooked or ignored; Ms Aberegg was armed at the time of this incident and did pull this handgun out during interaction with the police, causing an officer with the SBPD to fire his weapon.”

Hannah’s obituary reads: “It is with deep heartbreak that we announce the passing of Hannah Annette Aberegg, born July 2, 2000, who left this world far too soon on May 6, 2026, at the age of 25.
“Hannah was the devoted mother of two beautiful children, Kai’son Aberegg and Ari’Ella Thompson‑Aberegg, who were the very centre of her world. Everything she did, every choice she made, was rooted in her love for them. They were her purpose, her joy, and her greatest pride.
“She was the cherished daughter of William Aberegg Sr. and Heather Trobaugh, and the loving sister of William Aberegg Jr. and Nevaeh Trobaugh. Hannah was surrounded by a large, deeply connected family who loved her fiercely, far too many to list individually, but each one held a special place in her heart.

“Hannah lived with her emotions wide open. She loved boldly, cared deeply, and never hesitated to show her heart. Her tattoos told the story of her life, her struggles, her passions, her memories, and her dreams. She embraced people with a rare kind of sincerity, offering love without hesitation and loyalty without conditions.”
It added: “She found joy in the simple things: the companionship of her dogs, the warmth of family, and the beauty of everyday life. One of her greatest wishes was to swim with dolphins, a dream that reflected her gentle spirit and her love for the natural world. Hannah enjoyed everything life had to offer, finding light even in difficult moments.
“Hannah’s presence was unforgettable. Her laughter, her honesty, her stubborn strength, and her enormous heart will be missed beyond measure. Though her time here was far too short, the love she gave will continue to live on through her children, her family, and all who were blessed to know her. Her memory will forever be carried in the hearts of those who loved her.”
Hannah gained recognition through her appearance in the second series of Girls Incarcerated, having experienced repeated imprisonment by age 18 while battling addiction issues.
