James Paul Gracey, the 20-year-old University of Alabama student, vanished under mysterious circumstances during a spring break trip to Barcelona, Spain. Friends who were partying with him at the renowned beachfront nightclub Shôko reported that he was constantly on his phone throughout the night, even while the group was trying to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. One friend reportedly overheard—or caught a glimpse of—an intense argument he was having in the club’s bathroom, heightening concerns about what might have transpired before he disappeared.

The group had been having a good time at Shôko, a top-ranked global club in the Port OlÃmpic area near Barceloneta Beach, popular among tourists and international students. Gracey, known as Jimmy, decided to stay longer after his friend left around 3 a.m. on March 17, 2026. He never returned to the Airbnb where he was staying, sparking immediate alarm from his family and friends.
His mother, Therese Gracey, publicly appealed for information, noting that authorities recovered his phone—though details on how remain unclear, with some reports suggesting it was found during an unrelated arrest. Police are actively investigating, including reviewing CCTV footage that reportedly shows him leaving the venue with an unidentified person, leading to suspicions of foul play. Searches have focused on the nightlife district and surrounding areas, but no confirmed sightings have emerged since that early morning.
Gracey, a junior from Elmhurst, Illinois, majoring in accounting and set to graduate soon, was described as outgoing and excited about the trip to visit friends studying abroad. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, dark pants, and a distinctive gold chain with a rhinestone cross. The University of Alabama has offered support to his family, emphasizing it was a personal trip.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, with friends, fraternity members, and the broader community rallying to spread awareness. As days pass without answers, questions linger: What was the heated phone argument about? Who was he speaking with so urgently in the bathroom? And what happened in the chaotic hours after he stepped out of the club? Authorities continue their efforts, urging anyone with information to come forward in what remains a deeply troubling and unresolved disappearance.
