Ozzy Osbourne fans have started a petition to have Birmingham Airport in England named after him following his death on July 22
Music icon Ozzy Osbourne’s fans have started a petition to have Birmingham Airport in England named after him following his death at age 76 on July 22.
Osbourne died shortly after he and his Black Sabbath bandmates reunited for their farewell show, Back to the Beginning, on July 5 at Villa Park in their native Birmingham.
The petition on Change.org is called, Rename Birmingham Airport as Ozzy Osbourne International, and the description reads, “Ozzy Osbourne was the most important musician ever to hail from Birmingham. He rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the pioneering rock band Black Sabbath, who invented the genre of heavy metal.
“Ozzy’s influence on music and culture is undeniable. Naming our international airport after him would be a fitting tribute to his extraordinary career and contributions to the arts.
“Other airports in the UK are named after their famous children (George Best International Airport in Belfast, John Lennon Airport in Liverpool) so it is only right that we do this here in Birmingham, in honour of Ozzy.

“Together, we can celebrate the legacy of Ozzy Osbourne and the incredible influence our city has had on the world stage, thanks to him.”
The petition’s organizer is called Dan Hudson, whose profile description reads, “Half of A Gay And A Nongay, the UK’s #1 LGBTQ+ podcast. Host of BBC TV doc Sashay To Hell. Radio host and stand-up comic.”
At the time of writing, Hudson’s call to action has 55,245 verified signatures.
On July 25, Birmingham Airport responded to the petition on Change.org, writing, “At BHX we are aware of the legacy and love Ozzy Osborne has in the region. He is rightfully a talent and character that needs to be celebrated and remembered by his fans, long after he has left us.
“We are aware of the petition and are following it closely. In the immediate future we are looking at options that are quicker and easier to deliver than a renaming of an international airport.

“Ozzy Osborne is an inspiration to so many in our region proving that talent, hard work, and commitment can take you to all corners of the world.
“In coming weeks, we will be looking at how we can celebrate his heritage and contribution to the region via terminal artwork, creating a greater sense of place for Birmingham and his fans.”
Meanwhile, fans have been signing books of condolence at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and at Villa Park in Aston, the area of the city in which Osbourne grew up
Thousands lined the streets in Birmingham on July 30 to watch his casket, adorned with his name arranged in purple flowers, make its way down Broad Street in the city center in an emotional funeral procession.
Sharon Osbourne, his wife of more than 40 years, and their children, Aimee, Kelly, and Jack, paused the procession and exited their vehicle to put their own floral tributes to him on Black Sabbath Bridge next to fans’.
The former Talk host was visibly emotional as she clutched her face, sobbing while looking at all the tributes fans had laid out since she announced Osbourne’s death on July 22.
Kelly, who appeared to pay tribute to her father by wearing his blue-tinted sunglasses, and Jack held her up by each arm.
After their emotional moment, Sharon leaned on rarely-seen daughter Aimee as the family flashed peace signs to the thousands of fans who came out to bid the singer farewell.
Fans were heard chanting Osbourne’s name as a local group of musicians, Bostin’ Brass, played some of the singer’s hits like Black Sabbath’s Iron Man and his solo hit Crazy Train. Others were heard chanting, “Ozzy Ozzy Ozzy, oi oi oi!”
