A 7-year-old’s bravery is being formally recognized by her community.

A month after calling 911 after her father fell down and lost consciousness while walking down the stairs, Mia Bates is set to be honored by her hometown.

On Tuesday, Feb. 24, Mia will receive the key to the village and be honored by its mayor, Jade Curry, and first responders.

The Village of Lynwood previously credited Mia’s “bravery and quick thinking” for helping “save her father’s life.”

“When her dad, Xavier, suffered a serious fall at home, Mia stayed calm under pressure, called 911, provided critical information to the dispatcher, and let paramedics into the house when they arrived,” the town wrote in a January statement shared to social media. “Her actions made all the difference.”

Xavier, a railroad conductor, told WLS that the incident happened back in January while he was going down the stairs and slammed his head, immediately losing consciousness.

Since Mia’s mom was at work, she quickly sprang into action, ran to the phone, and called 911, WLS reported.

Mia, who advised others in a similar situation to be “brave,” told WLS that she knew her father needed to go to the hospital “where he could get better” and was “glad the ambulance helped him.”

Lynwood Fire Chief Lashaun Alston told WLS that he read the notes from the dispatch call and credited Mia for being “calm” and “collect.”
