Meteorologist and Today co-anchor Dylan Dreyer is peeling back the curtain about her recent split from husband Brian Fichera – and admitted that there were some things that they just ‘couldn’t fix.’

In July, Dreyer announced the shock split from her husband of over a decade via Instagram, as she posted a lengthy message on the social media platform.

The anchor married Fichera, a freelance cameraman and producer, in 2012, after meeting at work at NBC’s Boston affiliate, WHDH.

They share three children together – sons Calvin ‘Cal’ Bradley, eight, Oliver ‘Ollie’ George, five, and Russell ‘Rusty’ James, three.

Now, Dreyer is opening up about the breakup, as she had a candid discussion with friend Jenna Bush Hager while co-hosting Today with Jenna & Friends on Wednesday.

As soon as the show started, Hager dove right into asking Dreyer how single life was, as well as how co-parenting was going.

‘Everybody has their reasons for what leads to a separation or divorce, like, that’s another story with a lot of wine and that’s a whole different thing, but either way, we’ve gotten to this place,’ Dreyer explained.

She said that she and Fichera told her kids that they will always be a ‘family’ and a ‘group of people who love each other.’

Dreyer emphasized that her children are ‘surrounded by love’ every single day.

‘There’s something freeing, I think for Brian and I, where, whatever reasons, whatever broke in your marriage, you could either fix it if you can… or you accept that it’s broken and you take this new step forward,’ Dreyer explained.

‘So there was something we couldn’t fix, so now we have reframed our relationship that we are no longer husband and wife, and all those things that were broken, I don’t hold them against you, because we’ve accepted they’re broken, that’s why we’ve separated, so now let’s move forward as friends,’ Dreyer continued.

‘I’m not mad at those other things that I was getting mad at before, because just like a friend, you give them a little more grace when you’re not married to it, and I can be a better friend than a wife, and now the boys are surrounded by love,’ she said.

They will also be spending the Thanksgiving holiday together.

‘First and foremost, the kids have to feel love and they have to be happy,’ Dreyer said.

‘I have three boys, I want their dad in their lives, they need that. They need both the dynamic of a father and a mother, and we’re providing for that for them in the best way possible.’

Jenna then asked Dreyer how she’s been getting through the past few months, as she described her friend being ‘heartbroken’ over the situation.

‘I’ve relied on my faith more than anything,’ Dreyer revealed in response.

‘Every morning I read God Calling, every night I read Jesus Calling, and there’s something really comforting knowing that there’s a higher power holding my hand every day,’ she admitted.

At the time of their breakup, a source told Daily Mail that the separation was ‘amicable.’

‘Dylan and Brian remain best friends, and the separation is amicable. Their full focus is on their three small children,’ they explained.
