Tom Cruise Stuns Fans With an Unrecognizable Transformation in His New Film – You’ll Have to Look Twice to Realize It’s Him!

Tom Cruise has an unrecognizable transformation in the upcoming film, Digger.
The official trailer for the black comedy was released on Monday, July 13. The 64-year-old actor plays the titular role of Digger Rockwell and, in the trailer, is seen donning a fat suit, a white-and-grey hairpiece, and speaking in a prominent Southern accent for the character-driven role — a similar transformation to what he did for Tropic Thunder (2008). Digger is penned and directed by five-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The new film is the Mexican filmmaker’s latest English-language film since The Revenant. The satirical film is the first collaboration between Tom and Iñárritu, 62.
Tom has previously expressed that he has been a fan of Iñárritu since seeing his debut feature, the 2000 crime thriller Amores Perros. At a special presentation at the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles on Thursday, July 9, Tom also did a Q&A after presenting footage to the press and fans. This comes as the Mission: Impossible star attended the World Cup Opening Ceremony in California alongside David and Victoria Beckham.

“What a brilliant film. It was amazing,” Tom said about Iñárritu’s debut feature at the Q&A, per Variety.”I was one of the first audiences, and I heard about it early on, so when I saw that film, I don’t know how you all felt, but I was like, ‘What the f–k? This guy!'”
Tom shared that he would show the film to friends and that it was years before they met and much longer before they worked together. Seven years ago, the opportunity came when Iñárritu pitched Digger to Tom. The former DJ had written the screenplay in 2023, with Sabina Berman and his Birdman co-writers Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris. He and Tom went over the script in person over several days.
Tom also mentioned that with the process of making Digger, “I have never had something that could challenge me in this way, and neither has Alejandro.”

He also spoke about his process of becoming a character and noted the role makeup plays in that process.
“When we’re looking for characters, we’re looking for humor, drama, certain constructs [and asking] ‘How do we communicate this?’” Cruise said, outlining his process. “Whether it’s Les Grossman [in Tropic Thunder] or Interview With the Vampire, Collateral or Risky Business, I’m always asking, ‘How do I communicate this?’ The physicality, the makeup, that is stuff that you find.”
The official synopsis of Digger states, “The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”
