Drew Barrymore Brings Back Her Wild Side: Desk-Dancing Flashback Stuns Stephen Colbert
Nearly 30 years after shocking late-night audiences with her now-iconic dance atop David Letterman’s desk, Drew Barrymore has proven that some things never change — she still knows how to steal the spotlight.
On Thursday night’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the free-spirited actress turned a nostalgic nod into a full-blown moment of late-night history.
It all began when Barrymore, radiant and mischievous as ever, revisited her well-documented 1995 stunt with Letterman — when, at just 20 years old, she leapt onto his desk, danced wildly, and left audiences (and Letterman himself) speechless on his birthday.
“You seemed a bit offended that you never got to go up on the desk,” Colbert teased, raising an eyebrow at his guest.
Barrymore, unable to resist the challenge, grinned. Moments later, she peeled off her jacket, unbuttoned her crisp white shirt to reveal a bold “We ♥ Stephen” message scrawled on the back — and before Colbert could protest, she was up on the desk, twirling with gleeful abandon.
“It’s all different now,” Barrymore declared mid-dance, her voice equal parts cheeky and wistful.
The audience roared, Colbert blushed, and then, in a moment of genuine tenderness, the host stood, embraced Barrymore, and whispered, “You’re the best.”
Barrymore shot back with equal warmth: “No, you’re the best.”

It was a surreal full-circle moment — blending the chaotic energy of Letterman’s era with Colbert’s more thoughtful hosting style. For a brief instant, late-night television felt alive with the kind of unpredictable magic that made it must-see in the first place.
And the nostalgia may not end there. Sources close to production revealed that David Letterman himself is expected to appear on The Drew Barrymore Show in its upcoming sixth season — a reunion that could bridge three generations of late-night history.
The desk-dance cameo also came with a bittersweet undertone. Barrymore, who has long been one of Colbert’s most loyal guests, was reportedly the last star to thank him personally after CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end in May 2026. The decision, citing mounting financial challenges, will close the curtain on more than 30 years of one of America’s most beloved late-night franchises.
For now, though, Drew Barrymore has given late-night fans something they’ll never forget: a reminder that sometimes, the most powerful way to honor the past is to dance right on top of it.
