The suspects were planning to rob a courier vehicle in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, when they were intercepted by police and private security on the R25 towards Bronkhorstspruit.

Two unlicensed firearms, blue lights and police reflector jackets were found in the suspects’ car.

One suspect, who is the driver, was seriously wounded and taken to hospital.

“While on the surveillance, the team spotted the cars that matched the description given.

The cars were followed until on R25 in Kempton Park,” said Gauteng Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo

“As the team was stopping the cars, the suspects in a white Volkswagen Jetta started shooting at the police and a shootout ensued.”

Masondo said two other suspects escaped in another car.

“The recovered firearms will be taken for a ballistic test to determine if they were used in the commission of other crimes,” he added.
