THE man accused of killing an 18-year-old girl while she walked with friends has been revealed to be an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela.

College student Sheridan Gorman was shot as she walked on a beach near campus, and her friends were sent into a frenzy looking for cover.

The freshman from Loyola University was pronounced dead at the scene.

Now, 25-year-old Jose G. Medina has been charged with first-degree murder as the case has become a political firestorm due to his immigration status.

Medina was first identified by DHS as an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela.

The agency said he had come into the country in May 2023 and was arrested for shoplifting in June of that year.

The agency asked Chicago politicians not to release him after his arrest.

“She was failed by open border policies and sanctuary politicians who RELEASED this illegal alien TWICE before he went on to commit this heinous murder,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a press release.

“We are calling on Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago’s sanctuary politicians to commit to not releasing this criminal illegal alien from jail back into American neighborhoods.”

Pritzker then condemned government officials for politicizing the killing.

“Violent crime has no place in our streets, and we expect the alleged perpetrator to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” Pritzker said.

“The Trump Administration needs to stop politicizing heinous tragedies and instead focus on real solutions, like reinstating federal funds to prevent violence that support our public safety efforts.”

The freshman’s murder

Gorman was hanging out with friends near the beach last week when they walked to the end of the pier, trying to view the Northern Lights, the family said.

Prosecutors then say that a masked man, hidden behind a lighthouse, came out and shot her, according to WMAQ.

Her friends had fled at the sound, and Gorman was found dead.

Security camera footage near the area tracked the suspect to his home, where a handgun that had matching bullets was found.

“We acknowledge the arrest of the individual accused of taking our daughter’s life and thank the Chicago Police Department, Area Three Detectives, and all those involved in the investigation who worked quickly to identify and apprehend him,” her family said in a statement.

“Their efforts matter. But this is not justice — it is the first step toward it.

“What Sheridan was doing that night — walking with friends near her campus—was normal. It was safe. It is what students do every day,” the statement continued.

“We will not allow this to be dismissed as ‘wrong place, wrong time.’ This was not random misfortune. This was a violent and preventable act.”

The family said that they were “gravely disappointed” of the policies that left this “individual to remain in a position to commit this crime.”

“When systems fail — whether through release decisions, lack of coordination, or unwillingness to act — the consequences are not abstract. They are real,” the letter said.

“And in our case, they are permanent.”

Medina was supposed to be in court Monday, but was hospitalized for tuberculosis, WMAQ reported.

He is due to appear in court on Friday.
