Wait, Is Taylor Swift’s “Ruin The Friendship” About Blake Lively?

Demi Lovato’s “Ruin the Friendship” is allegedly about Nick Jonas, but who is Taylor Swift’s “Ruin the Friendship” about? Taylor just announced a brand new album, The Life of a Showgirl, during a recent appearance on BF Travis Kelce’s podcast, and fans are already analyzing the track list. TS12 will be 12 tracks (no secret double album this time), and “Ruin the Friendship” is track No. 6.

On the pod, Taylor shared that she collaborated with Swedish producers Max Martin and Shellback to make an upbeat pop record. She revealed that the album is about what was going on “behind the curtain” of the Eras Tour, which started in March 2023 and ended in December 2024. Somehow, Taylor managed to write and record the entire album while touring because, well, she’s simply not human.

“Ruin the Friendship” is sparking interest online because fans are wondering if (rather than a friends-to-lovers story like Demi’s) the song is inspired by Taylor’s alleged falling out with Blake Lively. There’s been rumored tension between the singer and the actress amid Blake’s ongoing It Ends With Us legal feud with Justin Baldoni — a situation that reportedly involves Taylor. So, is Taylor Swift’s “Ruin the Friendship” about Blake Lively? Here’s what we know.Taylor Swift and Blake Lively

Shortly after the track list was revealed, some fans on X were immediately convinced that “Ruin the Friendship” is about Taylor and Blake’s alleged friendship breakup. “Who else thinks Ruin The Friendship and CANCELLED! are about Blake Lively👀🍿,” X user @mynerdyhome speculated. Another user, @littlemissjacob, declared, “Taylor Swift’s ruin the friendship has to be about Blake Lively.”

Radio host Billy Bush is also convinced that Taylor’s gonna spill the Blake tea on this new album. “I do think that she will shade Blake Lively on her album,” he speculated. “Because Blake Lively is, after all, an ex. And [Taylor] likes to talk about her exes… She’s an ex-bestie.”

What allegedly happened between Taylor and Blake? It’s complicated. Back in December 2024, Blake accused her It Ends With Us co-star and director, Justin Baldoni, of sexual harassment and retaliation. He then countersued her for defamation and has accused her of intimidating him into making script changes. Those script changes allegedly involved Taylor.

Justin’s lawsuit includes an alleged text convo where he and Blake seemingly talk about Taylor and her influence on the script. According to the alleged texts, Blake seemingly compares herself to the Game of Thrones character, Khaleesi, and refers to Ryan and Taylor her “dragons.” In early May, Taylor was sent a document subpoena by Justin’s lawyers, but the subpoena has since been dropped. Since then, there have been several reports about the state of Blake and Taylor’s friendship.

In June, a source told People that Blake and Taylor are trying to get back “on good terms,” but “their friendship isn’t the same as it was before.” The source added that they “haven’t been spending as much time together as they did in the past” and “Taylor is working to trust Blake again but it’s going to take some time.” This update came after a May People report that their friendship had “halted.” Blake and Taylor notably haven’t been seen together since October 2024 when they grabbed dinner with their partners in NYC.

Taylor obviously has songs about several of her exes, and she’s rumored to have songs about Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian too, so it wouldn’t be shocking if she wrote about another falling out. But the “Ruin the Friendship” theory is just a rumor for now! We won’t know the “Ruin the Friendship” lyrics until The Life of a Showgirl comes out on October 3.
