Nicole Piastri has spoken out amid the ‘sacrifice’ he’s made to chase his dream.
Oscar Piastri‘s mother has opened up on what life is like as the parent of an F1 driver, admitting she finds it “awful” to watch races whether she’s there in-person or back in Australia. And she admits there’s a certain “toll” that Piastri being on the other side of the world takes on the family.
The Australian driver has become a household name in 2025, leading the F1 championship for the majority of the season. He’s fallen behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris in recent weeks, and is now more of a long-shot to claim his first world title.

With just three race weekends until the end of the season, Piastri is 24 points behind Norris overall. With a race victory worth 25 points, the Aussie has a lot of work to do while needing results with Norris to go his way as well.
Speaking on SEN radio this week, Piastri’s mother Nicole opened up on what it’s been like for his family back in Australia. Nicole often travels the world to be with her son, who’s still only 24 years old. His three younger sisters Mae, Hattie and Nicole have also attended grand prix weekends in the past.

Oscar Pastri’s mum reveals family ‘toll’
But they’re back in Australia at the moment and were on hand to receive his prestigious DON award at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame gala on Monday night. Nicole admitted she “can’t wait” to have him back home for Christmas, lifting the lid on the family “sacrifice” he’s had to make to chase his dream.
“I don’t think it’s easier being there or watching from home,” she said. “It’s all pretty awful to be honest. The toll is that like most athletes they have to move away at a young age and they are a long way away.
“Unlike the European drivers, they can duck home between races and see family, attend birthdays and weddings etc. The Aussies don’t get that. We have missed out on a lot of family time. It’s a sacrifice we are all willing to make. I’m certainly not going to sit here and complain about my situation as the mother of an F1 driver.
“The toll is we don’t get to be around him as much as we would like to. I can’t wait to have him home for Christmas. It’s been a long year.”
Piastri family grateful for support of Mark Webber
Piastri is the oldest of four siblings, with younger sisters Mae, Hattie and Edie following his career closely. His three sisters were also in attendance at the Hall of Fame night and couldn’t be prouder of their brother.
With Nicole back in Australia most of the time, Oscar is guided by his manager and former F1 driver Mark Webber. She’s eternally grateful for the way Webber and partner Ann have helped mentor and shape Piastri’s career.
“It’s incredible to have an F1 driver mentoring you and someone of Mark’s level,” Nicole said. “It’s not just his experience but also Ann Webber’s. She is very much involved, they are the dream team.
“She is the ultimate manager and then (Mark) is the person who has experienced what Oscar is going through. He’s a great down-to-earth Aussie. It’s perfect. Oscar benefits enormously. Its incredible company for him to have them there.”
