Netflix fans in the mood for a dose of guilty pleasure nostalgia should look no further than this ‘secret masterpiece’ teen comedy that was originally released in 2004.

The streaming service added this underrated cult classic earlier this month and it’s the perfect way to cap off your weekend viewing plans.

Don’t let the film’s 15 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating put you off either; whether or not you watched it as a teen, Sleepover is guaranteed to take you back to the friendship, fashion and hilarity of your adolescence.

It follows a group of teen girls who are desperate to claw their way out of their geeky status amongst their high school peers by embarking on an all-night adventure that pits them against their popular rivals.

As well as providing nostalgia and plenty of gags, Sleepover also boasts a cast of familiar faces, including Oscar-winner Brie Larson, plus Spy Kids’ Alexa Vega in the leading role.

Other major talents include Evan Peters of American Horror Story fame, plus Jane Lynch and Steve Carell before their star-making roles in Glee and The Office.

Despite the film’s poor reviews and box office performance at the time, in the 20-plus years since its release Sleepover has gradually garnered a passionate cult following who all maintain it’s well worth your time.

One early convert to the film said at the time on IMDb: “BEST MOVIE EVA!!!!!!!!!

“That movie was the best movie I have ever seen! It was cute and funny!! Alexa Vega did a perfect job on acting as Julie! She is the best actress in the universe!! I love her!”

Someone else called it “excellent” and went on: “In my opinion, this was a great movie for teens! It was fast paced and funny! The actors in it were great.”

Another fan raved: “Sleepover is like a comforting glass of hot chocolate

“If you are looking for a thought-provoking impassioned award-nominated movie, you are in the WRONG place, but if you are looking for a happy-go-lucky teen movie where everything goes well in the end and life couldn’t get more perfect, Sleepover is quite a viable option.”

There are also plenty of fans giving the film strong reviews on Letterboxd, including this five-star write-up: “I absolutely adore this movie. It’s such an underrated iconic y2k gem that needs more recognition!

“This has such a good balance between a girlycom and romcom. The plot is also so fun. I wish my sleepovers were this fun! I seriously suggest you watch this if you like y2k girly movies like mean girls, wild child and aquamarine!”

Another user reminisced: “I watched this movie when I was like 8 and I rewatched it today. They seriously don’t make good movies like this anymore, R.I.P 2000s girly films.”

And a final fan simply declared: “This is a masterpiece.” Planning a sleepover or watch-party with your friends this weekend? Definitely ensure Sleepover is on your radar.

Sleepover is available to stream on Netflix.
