Lindsay Clancy’s daughter’s preschool teacher, Susan Bertolo, noticed that the young girl was acting strangely and out of character just one day before she was killed inside her home, a court was told on Thursday.
The mother’s longtime friend, Amy Bevins, also said that Clancy texted her a few days before the children were killed to say she was battling with ‘dark thoughts’ and was trying new drugs to help.
Clancy is accused of murdering Cora, five, Dawson, three, and Callan, eight months, using exercise bands in the basement of her Duxbury home in January 2023.
The Massachusetts mom, 35, then tried to end her own life after slashing her wrists and neck before jumping from a second-story window.
Clancy has pleaded not guilty, citing postpartum psychosis, a rare but serious medical emergency characterized by a rapid-onset psychiatric episode.
The prosecution maintains that the former nurse’s actions were premeditated and deliberate. The trial continues at Plymouth County Superior Court.

Breaking:Cora Clancy’s teachers tell court about little girl’s concerning behavior one day before murders
Susan Bertolo also worked at Learning Sprouts preschool that Cora and Dawson attended.
She looked after the ‘Sunflower’ room – which Cora attended three days a week in the mornings.
Both Lindsay and Patrick Clancy dropped off Cora. She recalls seeing Patrick more but she shared the drop-off with the other preschool teacher.
Bertolo teared up as she described Cora as an ‘amazing’ and ‘wonderful’ preschool student who she was ready to go into kindergarten.
Cora’s preschool teacher teared up as she recalled the last day she saw Cora.
On the morning of January 23, 2023, Cora was dropped off at preschool.
That day, she needed to use the bathroom more than normal, Bertolo said. She noted that she was concerned because this was out of the ordinary for the child, and told another teacher.
When she told Clancy at pickup, she said she had a doctor’s appointment for Cora the next day.
The five-year-old was complaining that her tummy hurt and didn’t want to get up from her nap, her second teacher of the day, Stephanie Williams, told the court.
Williams told Clancy this when she picked her daughter up that afternoon.
Instead of Cora getting up and meeting her mom at the door to the classroom – as the children normally do – Clancy had to walk into the room and gently coax the girl to leave.
Clancy scooped up the little girl from her cot, saying to her: ‘Oh baby, come on let’s go get Dawson and we’ll go home.’
When asked if she noticed anything different about Clancy that day – or any day – she said: She was just a very loving mother who cared very much for her children.’

Judge William Sullivan is excusing the jury early for the day so he can iron out a motion between the defense and prosecution.

Officer confirms they never found any abuse
Under cross-examination, the officer confirmed that – throughout all of his investigating – he had never found any evidence that Clancy was abusive toward Dawson, Cora or Callan.

Clancy’s Facebook post about Dawson is shown to court
Jurors are being shown a Facebook post that Clancy made about Dawson.
On May 5, 2021, Clancy posted a lengthy post in the Facebook group, Parenting for Littles.
‘Hello lovely parents i’m looking for advice,’ it began.
‘I’m truly finding my 19 month old the most difficult human I have ever encountered,’ she wrote about Callan.
‘Every single thing with him is a battle and it has been this way for a while.’

Witness 11: Detective Andrew Chiachio
Andrew Chiachio is with the Massachusetts State Police detectives unit.
On the night of January 24, 2023, he went to the CVS store and 3V restaurant to obtain surveillance footage.
Patrick Clancy had gone to collect medication for Cora from the CVS that evening – at Clancy’s request. He had also gone to pick up a takeout order from 3V.
During that time, she killed the children and tried to kill herself.

Friend describes Clancy’s demeanor two days before killings
On January 22, 2023 – two days before the killings – the Clancys – Patrick, Lindsay, Cora and Dawson – came over to his home for a gathering.
Clancy seemed ‘quieter than normal’ that day.
But her behavior and demeanor appeared normal, he said.

Witness 10: Patrick’s friend Kyle Carney
The next witness is Kyle Carney. He is Patrick’s friend and lives in Duxbury.
When the Clancys lived there, he would see them around every other month.
He described Clancy as ‘kind’ and ‘caring.’
In the summer of 2022 – after Callan was born – they would all have beach dinners together.
