The devastating shooting happened at around 1:20pm in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, city officials confirmed.
After gunfire was heard, terrified witnesses ran for their lives, with the mom screaming “My baby! My Baby” before she darted into a nearby deli, a witness told News 12 Brooklyn.
When the mom got inside, she realized her baby was bleeding after being struck in the head, and the infant was rushed to a nearby hospital by her dad, police sources told CBS News.
Detectives are searching for two men who were caught rushing away on a scooter, with one appearing to be pointing a pistol as they left.
The moped being driven by the men has been found abandoned by police.
A witness, who said he was hit by gunfire, has described the chaotic scene after the attack.
“I thought it was fireworks, but then they hit me on my leg. I got metal pieces in my leg,” the witness told CBS News.
“The family went to the store and the mom started screaming. The baby looked lifeless the father picked up the baby and ran to the hospital.”
The New York Police Department and Fire Department of New York flooded the intersection which was right by a day care.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and gave a briefing on the incident on Wednesday.
“There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling now. No declaration strong enough to lift the grief they are now forced to carry,” he said.
“We cannot accept this as normal in our city. We cannot grow numb to this pain. And today is a devastating reminder of just how much more work there is to be done to combat gun violence across this city.”
New York City police commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed at the same briefing that video surveillance showed two men driving a moped “against traffic” in the Williamsburg neighborhood.
She said the man seated on the back of the moped was seen “discharging at least two rounds” toward a corner with “several adults, as well as two strollers, and several children standing nearby.”
“Our seven-month-old victim was sitting inside one of these strollers when she was struck,” Tisch said.
The men fled the scene on the moped and later crashed into an oncoming car “two blocks from the scene and both men [were] thrown from the scooter.”
According to Tisch, the rear passenger landed “so hard on the pavement that he [lost] both of his shoes,” which were recovered by police.
The rear passenger was transported to Brooklyn Hospital by EMS.
“Investigators believe that this male fits the description of our shooter based on clothing and appearance,” Tisch said.
The man is now in custody on an unrelated investigation for domestic violence robbery, according to police, who are continuing to investigate the incident.
Police are still searching for the second suspect, who is the “subject of a massive NYPD manhunt,” according to the commissioner.
She added that the shooting is believed to be “gang motivated” and the young victim was an “unintended target.”
No gun has been recovered.
City Councilmember Jenifer Gutierrez who represents neighborhood near the shooting also said he “heart is broken” for the family.
