The Port Macquarie community is reeling in shock and grief after police confirmed the suspicious death of 31-year-old local woman Megan Tangye, with her devastated family breaking down in tears as they mourn the loss of someone they describe as “kind and sweet.”
Megan Tangye was found deceased in her home on January 2, prompting an immediate major crime scene declaration. NSW Police have treated the case as suspicious from the outset, with detectives from the Mid North Coast Command leading the investigation. An autopsy is underway to determine the exact cause of death, but authorities have confirmed multiple injuries were present.
Family members, gathered outside the cordoned-off property, were seen visibly distraught, unable to contain their grief as news of Megan’s identification spread. “How could anyone do this to our kind and sweet Megan..?” one relative was overheard saying through sobs, capturing the raw anguish felt by loved ones.
Megan, a beloved hairdresser and community volunteer, was remembered for her warm smile and selfless nature. Friends described her as “the person who always put others first,” often helping at local events and supporting those in need. “She lit up every room,” a close friend told reporters. “This doesn’t make sense — she had so much life ahead.”
Police have urged the public not to speculate while appealing for information. “We are treating this as suspicious and leaving no stone unturned,” a spokesperson said. “Anyone who saw or heard anything unusual in the area between January 1 and 2 should come forward.”
The scene remains under forensic examination, with detectives interviewing neighbours and reviewing CCTV. No arrests have been made, and the motive remains unclear.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Port Macquarie, a coastal town known for its close-knit feel. Vigils have been organised, with candles and flowers placed near the home in tribute. Community leaders called for unity and support for the family during this “unimaginable time.”
As investigations continue, Megan Tangye’s death serves as a stark reminder of hidden dangers even in quiet communities. For her family — left grappling with questions and profound loss — the search for answers is only beginning.
