Charles Leclerc signs Aston Martin pre-contract with 2026 exit option if Ferrari fails
Charles Leclerc has reportedly signed a pre-contract with Aston Martin

F1 Formula 1 | Ferrari: Leclerc has signed with Aston Martin: the option
According to the latest information gathered exclusively by the Italian website F1-News.eu, Charles Leclerc has signed a pre-contract with Aston Martin. The agreement gives him a strategic option that could be activated after the first three races of the 2026 season if Ferrari’s new car fails to prove competitive. Should that happen, the Monegasque driver would be in line for a three-year deal worth more than 100 million euros in total.
Lawrence Stroll has also set a precise deadline: Charles Leclerc will need to communicate his decision between late May and mid-June 2026, allowing Aston Martin to move on the driver market if he chooses to remain in Maranello. It is a clause that opens completely new scenarios for the Monegasque, a driver emotionally tied to Ferrari but increasingly worried about facing yet another unsuccessful project. For Aston Martin, it could create unexpected developments next year, especially after the arrival of Adrian Newey as team principal.
The pre-contract: clauses, timing and conditions

The structure of the agreement is very clear. Charles Leclerc has secured the possibility to walk away after the first three race weekends of 2026, a critical period in which Ferrari’s new project will reveal at least part of its potential under the upcoming regulations. If the car fails to meet expectations, the door to Aston Martin would open immediately with a major offer: a three-year contract worth just over one hundred million euros, which would make him one of the highest-paid drivers on the grid.
To protect his team, Lawrence Stroll has imposed a strict and non-negotiable deadline set between late May and mid-June. This avoids the risk of Aston Martin being left without options should Charles Leclerc decide not to trigger the clause. It is a delicate balance that allows the Monegasque to gain precious time without depriving Aston Martin of the chance to build an alternative plan.
The heart with Ferrari, the doubt about the future
The reason Charles Leclerc wants to wait is deeply human: leaving Ferrari without having fought for a World Championship would be an incredibly painful decision for him. Within the driver’s entourage, there is open talk of the inner struggle behind this choice and his desire not to abandon the project without having full clarity about its true potential.
The year 2026 represents a crossroads both emotionally and professionally: a new set of regulations, a new car, and the long-awaited opportunity to understand whether Ferrari can finally offer him what he has been chasing since his debut in red. Charles Leclerc hopes Ferrari will rise to the challenge, crosses his fingers, and waits. But if the project disappoints once again, the Monegasque star would be ready to pack his bags — carrying with him the regret of an unrealized dream and the hope of fighting for the World Championship away from Maranello.
