The first apparent ransom note believed to be tied to the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, demanded two multi-million dollar payments and set a looming deadline, multiple sources who are familiar with the situation tell PEOPLE.
The letter, sent to Arizona television stations KOLD and KGUN, specified two separate sums: $4 million in bitcoin due Thursday, Feb. 5, and if that was not met, an increased demand of $6 million by Monday, Feb. 9, the sources say.
A source confirmed with PEOPLE that as of 2:30 p.m. local time Monday, no payments have been made toward the bitcoin account provided in the note.
Although the entire note has not been released, some details have been shared publicly.
Heith Janke, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Phoenix division, declined to say what — if anything — was requested at each deadline, or if there was a threat if the deadlines weren’t met while speaking at a press conference Thursday.
The alleged note did not include proof of life or a way for authorities and Nancy’s worried family to communicate with the people who sent it, Janke said. He added that the note mentioned an Apple Watch and a floodlight.
Also at Thursday’s press conference, Janke announced that a person was arrested after sending a fake ransom note.
Nancy — who requires daily medication to survive — was last seen at her home in Tucson on the night of Saturday, Jan. 31, and authorities believe she was taken against her will.
Her family reported her missing around noon the next day.
No suspects or persons of interest had been identified in Nancy’s kidnapping as of Sunday, Feb. 8, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a post on X. Sheriff Chris Nanos previously confirmed that blood found on the exterior porch of Nancy’s home matches her DNA.
On Friday, Feb. 6, the FBI acknowledged a new message potentially tied to Nancy’s kidnapping. “Investigators are actively inspecting the information provided in the message for its authenticity,” the statement read.

In recent days, Savannah has posted multiple videos on Instagram pleading for her mother’s safe return. As the Monday deadline approached, she released another video, saying in part, “We are at an hour of desperation.”
“We believe our mom is still out there,” she said. “We need your help. Law enforcement is working tirelessly around the clock, trying to bring her home, trying to find her. She was taken and we don’t know where. And we need your help.”
In a previous video shared on Saturday, Feb. 7, Savannah along with her siblings, Annie and Cameron, appeared to speak directly to their mother’s kidnappers.
“We received your message and we understand,” Savannah said. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
The FBI is now offering a $50,000 reward for any information leading to Nancy’s recovery or an arrest in the case.
Anyone with tips or leads is asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI in addition to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.
