Prince William has recorded a heartfelt video message for a digital memorial honouring Queen Elizabeth II, recalling treasured moments spent with his grandmother at Windsor Castle.

In the tribute, the Prince of Wales spoke of the regular visits he made to the Berkshire residence while attending nearby Eton College, where he would enjoy quiet afternoons with the late monarch and Prince Philip.

“I remember many a quiet afternoon, having tea with her and my grandfather at the castle, chatting, sharing stories, and seeing how completely at ease she was here, surrounded by family and her much-loved dogs and horses,” the 44-year-old said.

The heir to the throne credited his grandmother with instilling in him an appreciation for the ritual of afternoon tea.

“To this day, she’s given me a love of teatime that I never knew I needed,” William said in the recording.

He also reflected on observing the Queen riding in Windsor Great Park, even during her later years, which revealed a more private side of the monarch.

“Watching her ride her horses in the Great Park, even well into her later years, showed a side of Granny the world didn’t often see – off-duty, relaxed and utterly at home,” he continued.

The digital tribute formed part of wider commemorations marking what would have been Queen Elizabeth’s centenary year, with the monarch having died in September 2022 at the age of 96.

The online memorial was unveiled on April 21, coinciding with King Charles and Queen Camilla viewing designs for a permanent physical tribute to the late sovereign.

During a visit to the British Museum, the royal couple examined a scale model of the proposed memorial and statues depicting both of Charles’s parents.

The Queen’s reign spanned seven decades, making her Britain’s longest-serving monarch, while Prince Philip died in 2021.

William now resides on the Windsor estate with his wife Catherine and their three children: Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight.

The proximity to his grandmother’s beloved home adds particular poignancy to his reflections on the time they spent together there.

“These moments with my grandmother are ones I’ll always hold dear,” the Prince of Wales concluded in his tribute.

The digital memorial encourages both members of the public and notable figures to contribute their own memories and thoughts about the iconic monarch, creating an evolving tribute to her remarkable life and legacy.
