CHICAGO (WGN) — Chicago faith leaders and authorities are urging the community to come forward with information after a shooting in Auburn Gresham left a young mother dead. A vigil was held Friday to honor her life.

Witnesses called it nothing short of a miracle that the victim’s baby survived the shooting. The scene weighed heavily on both community members and first responders, many of whom returned to the scene to plead for justice.

“The people that pulled out automatic weapons on this very land that we stand on, ran up in broad daylight and murdered Gabryel are monsters to me,” Sen. Willie Preston (D-Illinois) said. “I’m calling on every person to say enough is enough.”

Police say the shooting unfolded around 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday in the 7900 block of S. May St. Someone opened fire on the car carrying 26-year-old Gabryel Ayers, her young daughter and a 27-year-old man.

The victims then crashed into a nearby GMC van, police said. A video shared on social media showed three gunmen running up to the car moments later as they continue to shoot, while witnesses ducked for cover.

Ayers suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to LCM Hospital in critical condition before she died from her injuries. The 27-year-old man, also shot multiple times, survived, as did the unharmed baby. Shell casings were found inside her car seat.

“I cannot call a duck a chicken or a pig a cow, but I can call a coward a coward, and these cowards will be hunted down,” Preston said. “They will be hunted down.”

Officers gathered with community members, faith leaders and the mayor for a public roll call, followed by a prayer vigil. Many speakers acknowledged a wave of recent violence affecting community across Chicago.
