An elite Sydney school has paused small boat training after a shark leapt from the water just metres from young rowers.

Students from The King’s School are believed to have been taking part in a holiday rowing session on the Parramatta River at Silverwater on Monday when the shark breached the water about 30m away.

Shocking vision shows the shark leaping from the river and twisting mid-air before splashing back into the water.

“A shark was observed breaching the surface of the water approximately 30m in front of our 1st Junior VIII boat,” Richards said.

“At no time were the boys in immediate danger, and the crew returned to the pontoon without incident.”

He said they are enhancing safety measures as a result and the private school has reportedly temporarily suspended small boat training.

The incident comes as NSW grapples with a spate of shark attacks in less than 48 hours.

The first victim, 12-year-old Nico Antic, was bitten after jumping off a 6m rock with two mates in Vaucluse about 4.20pm on Sunday.

His parents are now dealing with the “worst possible outcome” after he suffered severe leg injuries.

On Monday, 27-year-old surfer Andre de Ruyter was mauled at North Steyne Beach and underwent surgery for severe injuries to his lower right leg.

About 30 beaches remain closed, including along the 30km coastline marking Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Swimming events have been cancelled and the public urged to avoid the ocean and opt for pools.
