Eric Dane, a San Francisco native who stars on the HBO series “Euphoria,” has announced he has ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

But the 52-year-old actor, who also starred on ABC’s “Grey Anatomy,” told People on Thursday, April 10, that he is healthy enough to work.

“I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” Dane said. “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of ‘Euphoria’ next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a fatal, progressive degenerative disease that causes eventual paralysis. There is no known cure.

Rebecca Gayheart and Eric Dane, shown in 2013, have been married since 2004.

Dane is due on the “Euphoria” set on Monday, April 14. He plays Cal Jacobs, the strict father to Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs. Production on the long-delayed third season began in January, with Elordi, Oakland native Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney among the cast members returning.

Dane, who went to Sequoia High School in Redwood City and San Mateo High School, is also known for his roles as a doctor nicknamed McSteamy on “Grey’s Anatomy” and as a Navy captain on TNT’s “The Last Ship.” He was also a villain in last year’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.”

He has been married to actress Rebecca Gayheart since 2004. In 2018 they separated, and Gayheart filed for divorce. But in March, she filed court papers to dismiss the divorce. They have two daughters.
