Netflix has released the official trailer for Remarkably Bright Creatures, an emotional adaptation of the bestselling novel by Shelby Van Pelt.

At its core, the story explores grief, connection, and the unexpected ways people and creatures find their way back to each other.

The film follows Tova, a widow working at a local aquarium, whose quiet routine changes when she forms an unusual bond with Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus. At the same time, a young man named Cameron arrives in town searching for answers about his family, and their stories begin to intertwine.

Two-time Oscar winner Sally Field stars as Tova, bringing warmth and depth to a character shaped by years of loss. She appears alongside Lewis Pullman as Cameron, while Alfred Molina voices Marcellus.

The film is directed and co-written by Olivia Newman, with a creative team focused on staying true to the emotional core of the original novel.

Shelby Van Pelt’s debut book spent over 64 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, gaining readers with its blend of emotional storytelling, light mystery, and unique charm — especially through the perspective of Marcellus.

The film leans into realism rather than fantasy, using an unlikely friendship to tell a deeply human story about loneliness, second chances, and finding connection in unexpected places.

Remarkably Bright Creatures will premiere on Netflix on May 8.
