The Duchess of Edinburgh has sent her best wishes to a determined youngster days before she undertakes an enormous 1000-mile cycle. In a new video, posted on Pedalling With Purpose’s Instagram account, the Duchess can be heard wishing Chloe Marriage, 17, the best of luck before she and her family begin their cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats on July 26.
The family is completing the monumental journey to raise money for two charities – Treloar’s, a school that provides education, therapy and care to physically disabled young people and PALS (Partners of Active Leisure Scheme). Chloe is currently a student at Treolar’s, and Sophie has been the school’s Patron since 2019.
Beginning her message, the Duchess said: “Hello Chloe, I’m sending you my warmest wishes as you and your family prepare to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for Treloar’s and PALS.”
She continued: “This is an enormous feat of endurance, and having done my own cycle challenge ten years ago, I am so proud of you. It takes a lot of effort. I’ll be thinking of you as you set off on the 26th of July, and I look forward to you telling me all about it when we meet again. Take care and good luck!”
On the family’s GoFundMe page, they describe their upcoming journey in detail. They have written: “We are aiming to raise £50,000, split between two charities, PALS and Treloar’s, chosen by our daughter who has benefited from the amazing work they do.

“We are out to show the Family ability is greater than Individual disability. 1000+ miles, 5 People, 4 Riders, 3 Bikes, 2 Charities and 1 EPIC journey. Lands End to John O’Groats.
“The cycle ride is especially challenging for our daughter Chloe (17) who has cerebral palsy. She may not be able to walk but she loves to pedal. Guided by dad, Tom and massively supported by brothers Nicko (19) and William (15) the ride will be spread over 18 days. Supported by Alex and the family dog, Koda who will be travelling with all the kit needed (quite a lot) for the overnight stops, meeting up at lunch and emergency stops along the way to provide a space to ease any tired legs.”

The Duchess previously undertook an enormous 445-mile bike ride over seven days in 2016 to complete her Diamond Challenge cycle ride. The Diamond Challenge was a special initiative to mark the 60th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Sophie began her cycle from the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh and finished at Buckingham Palace, where she was greeted by huge crowds and her family, husband, Prince Edward and their two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex.
She said at the time: “If you told me that I would feel like this at the end of seven days cycling I would never have believed you. I do feel good and it has been a lovely, lovely experience.
