A new streaming movie starring Priyanka Chopra (Heads of State) and Karl Urban (The Boys) is being hailed as the best pirate movie in years.

Following the huge success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, film buffs have been itching to sail the seven seas again for almost 10 years since the last instalment, Dead Men Tell No Tales.

While Disney is reportedly still at work on the long-awaited reboot, Prime Video has finally delivered the answer to fans’ pleas for more swashbuckling cinematic adventures.

The Bluff stars Chopra as 19th Century pirate Ercell ‘Bloody Mary’ Bodden, who has left behind her life at sea to settle down in the idyllic Cayman Brac, where she’s awaiting the return of her husband, TH (played by Ismael Cruz Córdova).

Unbeknownst to her, TH has been kidnapped by the vicious Captain Connor (Karl Urban), who holds a deep, personal grudge against Ercell, his former protégé.

When Connor’s legion of buccaneers descends upon Ercell’s island in a bloody rampage, including Star Wars legend Temuera Morrison as Lee, his fearsome second-in-command, she’s forced to unleash her dormant pirate skills one last time to protect her homestead and finally reunite with her lost love.

What follows is an exhilarating and often brutal sequence of swordfights, stunts and booby traps that action movie fans will devour, helmed by director Frank E. Flowers with Avengers directors, the Russo brothers, providing expertise as producers.

The new film dropped today (Wednesday, 25th February) on Prime Video and has already received strong reviews from fans and critics, with many highlighting the “grisly” action and Chopra’s intense lead performance.

“There’s cinematic swoop to the movie that you might not expect in a straight-to-streaming swashbuckler, and you feel the grisliness as she drags herself along the ground in blood-splattered clothes like so many final girls of gory slashers before her,” the Guardian noted.

Critics have praised the ‘grisly’ action scenes(Image: PRIME VIDEO)

Original Cin said: “The swordplay, epic battles and the physicality of Jonas, Urban and Morrison is epic. What is really exciting is the planning that goes into Ercell’s protection of her family as she sets up defences, traps, and cunning stratagems.”

JoBlo’s Movie Network agreed: “This movie takes the conceits and storyline we have seen in films before and gives them a nice edge that keeps you glued to the screen to the very end.”

Screen Rant praised The Bluff as a “ninety-minute showcase for extremely tense, bloody fight choreography”, while Mark Reviews Movies added it feels “charmingly old-fashioned, with its swashbuckling action, yet distinctly modern, with its bloody and occasionally grisly violence.”

Praise continued on Letterboxd where one user posted: “kinda like die hard on an island and make it pirate-y. the single location is used pretty effectively. the action is great. everyone’s performances are quite fantastic.”

And another positive review said: “This is so violent and fun that you’ll forgive the occasional visual reminder that it’s a streaming movie; lots of well-shot action and shockingly nasty moments throughout! And it’s mercifully short!”

Make sure you get in on the hype early as The Bluff may have just set the high bar for action movies this year.

The Bluff is available to stream on Prime Video.
