What is Scott Foley’s new series ‘It’s Not Like That’ about?

It’s Not Like That follows Malcolm (Scott Foley), a pastor who is a recently widowed dad of three. Lori (Erinn Hayes) is newly divorced with two teens. Their families once did everything together, but now Malcolm and Lori must navigate their newly minted singledom, parenthood and the complexities of Malcolm being a modern-day pastor. Is this the beginning of a love story? It’s not like that. Or is it?

Foley, who is currently guest starring on Will Trent, spoke to Parade about why he decided on taking on a modern family drama, “This is the kind of television that I’m drawn to. There’s no high concept, no one is living in an altered universe/world, it’s just good strong story telling with interesting and complex characters. As a dad of three, I relate to this world to a certain degree and am always looking for an honest and interesting take on the human condition.”

Who created the ‘It’s Not Like That’ drama series?

It’s Not Like That was created by Ian Deitchman and Kristin Robinson, who are best known for Life As We Know It and Parenthood. “It’s Not Like That is a story about hope, and finding light after loss, rebuilding families and exhibiting grace in the most uncertain circumstances,” said Deitchman and Robinson. “There is a powerful dynamic around what we all choose to hold onto when everything around us is falling apart, and how we find our way back—something we hope audiences will relate to and love.”

Who’s in the cast of ‘It’s Not Like That’?

Scott Foley stars as Reverend Malcolm in 'It's Not Like That,' coming to The Wonder Project via Amazon Prime in 2026.

Scott Foley as Malcolm

Foley guest starred on Dawson’s Creek and Step by Step before rising to prominence on Felicity. He followed that up with roles on Scandal and The Unit. More recently, he has starred in La Dolce Vita on Netflix and on ABC’s Will Trent. Foley also serves as an executive producer on the series.

How did Foley approach the role of widowed father and pastor? “I seem to have a bit of a run going in my recent roles, as I believe the last three have been widowers. I lost my mom at a young age, so I have a bit of firsthand knowledge, having watched my father and how he handled that specific aspect of his life at that time. I did a lot of research to understand the role of a minister. I read a few books, and actually reached out to one of the authors, Zack Eswine, a pastor and father himself. We exchanged a few emails, and once he believed I was who I said I was, I hopped on a plane and spent a weekend with him and his family. We ate dinner in his home, and I was even able to attend his church and watch him work on a Sunday in front of his congregation. I spent most days peppering him and his lovely wife with more questions than I think they were expecting!”
