Achille Fong impressed the judges with his pop-punk style but how did the young musician really feel when judge Amy Shark pulled out her phone mid-audition?
Speaking to 7NEWS.com.au, the 20-year-old Sydney singer revealed what happened after the cameras stopped rolling on Australian Idol.
During his audition, Fong performed All The Small Things by 90s rock band Blink-182.
As he confidently rocked out on guitar, Shark did something unexpected — the Logie Award winning artist began filming the performance on her phone.
“It was so surreal stepping into that audition room and seeing all the judges,” Fong said.
“I knew Amy was a huge fan of pop punk, as she’s sang with Blink-182 before and knows the band members personally.
“When she started filming, I wasn’t sure if it was a good or a bad thing.
“But then she started smiling and I thought ‘this was a good thing’.”

After the audition, Shark told Fong she planned to send the video to members of Blink-182.
“I couldn’t believe it,” he said.
“When I came back to get my golden ticket, she told me the band members had responded and said they loved it.
“One even gave it a fire emoji.”
Fong, who grew up listening to bands like Blink-182, said it was “super crazy” to know they had watched a video of him performing their song.
“I’m forever grateful for Amy,” he added.
“She didn’t have to do that — record me and send it to the guys.
“I’m just really happy that my performance, my audition, was really appreciated.”
Fong, who grew up in Hong Kong and moved back to Sydney at 14, said pop-punk music has always been part of his life.
“This genre has a lot of energy and that’s just the person I am,” he told 7NEWS.com.au.
“Being able to perform such high-energy songs and being in front of crowds just jamming out, rocking out and entertaining the crowd — that’s what I love about the genre and that’s what I’m all about.”

Two years ago, while studying international business and archaeology at university, Fong landed a job as a stagehand.
Although he doesn’t get to meet the artists, he said watching bands he grew up listening to from the side of the stage — including Twenty One Pilots and Green Day — was a “surreal experience”.
Inspired by those moments and determined to pursue music seriously, Fong started his own band called Where She Was.
He credits his family as a constant source of support and inspiration.
His younger brother, Atilla, has firsthand experience of the pressures of reality TV, having found fame on singing competitions in Hong Kong and South Korea.
“He’s had a lot more experience in the industry than I do,” Fong said.
“I’m very proud of him because he’s quite successful now.”
Fong said his brother’s bravery in chasing his dreams at a young age encouraged him to apply for Australian Idol.
After earning a golden ticket and a place in the Top 30, Achille said his family were cheering him on from Hong Kong.
Heading into the next stage of the competition, he plans to stay true to himself.
“People can just expect me to rock out on stage and hopefully the crowd enjoys it,” Achille said.
