When I turn off my critic brain, I fully invest in the stories of Virgin River’s characters. I want to see Mel and Jack have a happy relationship. I root for Brie to find a man worthy of her love. I’m eager for Muriel to recover from cancer and delve fully into a happy relationship.
That being said, there are some undeniable issues I can’t ignore even when I’m watching as a fan. One of the worst is the show’s treatment of Mel, which has been the subject of conversation for many seasons now. As it turns out, one Virgin River actor shares concerns about Mel’s traumatic storylines.
Virgin River Has Always Treated Mel With Disdain

The show has been accused by many of being “trauma porn” because they refuse to let Mel be happy. They put her through traumatic situation after traumatic situation. It’s to the point where the criticism isn’t just coming from haters but genuine fans of Virgin River.
Before the show even started, Mel’s mother died young, she had a stillbirth, she had multiple miscarriages, and her husband died in a car crash. After Virgin River starts, it doesn’t get any better. She gets kidnapped by pot growers, her boyfriend gets another woman pregnant (but not really), and her boyfriend nearly dies.
The issue isn’t the infertility or miscarriages. That’s a sadly realistic struggle that many folks with uteruses go through. It makes sense that the struggles she had with Mark wouldn’t magically go away with Jack. That’s extremely realistic.
The issue isn’t family members dying. Once again, it’s realistic that Mel’s mother or husband dies. Death will touch every person at some point. It’s not even her getting held at gunpoint, as gun violence is a worryingly common thing.
The issue with Virgin River is that the trauma never stops for Mel. If it were any one of those things, it would be easier to accept. However, the sheer amount of trauma that writers put her through makes it feel like they hate Mel. I don’t necessarily think that’s true, but it certainly comes across that way.
The Diagnosis of Mel & Jack’s Baby In Virgin River Season 7 Continues The Issue
Superoinferior ventricles is an exceptionally rare condition, making up around 0.1% of heart defects (from Images in Paediatric Cardiology via PubMed Central). It requires emergency surgery immediately after his birth and potentially many more surgeries down the line. Looking into it further, it appears that the condition often occurs alongside other cardiac anomalies, which could affect the baby.
Parenting a child with high medical needs is difficult, and the medical emergencies and caregiving can cause trauma. That doesn’t make it any less fulfilling or worthwhile. That child deserves love and care from his parents, just like everyone else. It does, however, mean that Mel is once again being put through trauma.
The Virgin River character, who has experienced nonstop loss and life-threatening situations, now has to worry that her baby might not live. Given her experiences with losing family members, pregnancies, and her stillborn baby, her nervous system is already primed to kick into high gear.
At least this time, she isn’t in the situation alone. Jack is right there with her, and they’re supporting each other as they fight for their son. That doesn’t stop the situation from feeling cruel, after everything Mel Monroe has been through.
Alexandra Breckenridge Disliked The Baby Congenital Heart Disease Twist Too

In 2023, she told The Hollywood Reporter, “You know, if you look back at season one, coming into Virgin River, Mel was very deeply in loss and trauma, and as an actress, that was something I was looking forward to getting out of.”
Unfortunately for Breckenridge, Mel’s trauma never really stopped. The best she got was, collectively, one season of mostly happiness and very little trauma, between the end of season 6 and the start of Virgin River season 7.
Breckenridge reflected on the past and upcoming season of Virgin River in a March 2026 interview with Parade. She thought that Virgin River season 7 was one of the show’s best. However, Breckenridge also told the interviewer this:
“I didn’t like [the baby’s diagnosis] because this is really putting us through the wringer. I just hope it’s going to be okay in season 8. I don’t know how Mel is going to be able to handle this, given everything she’s gone through, so we’ll have to see.”
It’s unclear whether Breckenridge feels as strongly about this as the fans do, but it’s clear she’s worried about Mel. However, if we take anything positive away from that interview, Breckenridge is confident that the writers won’t make the baby die because the fans would revolt.
Mel Deserves A Truly Happy Storyline in Virgin River Season 8 & The Time Jump Could Help

After the conclusion of Virgin River season 7, the showrunner, Patrick Sean Smith, confirmed that they’re bringing back the time jumps. Virgin River season 8 will pick up four months after the finale.
This is quite the relief because it means we won’t have to watch Mel and Jack go through the agony of waiting to see if their son survives surgery and his immediate recovery. It also means that Virgin River has the chance to finally give Mel a truly happy story in season 8.
After they put Doc and Hope through the wringer with health scares, they gave the couple one full season of happiness together in Virgin River season 6 before going back to the drama. Mel, Jack, and their unnamed son deserve this, too.
The time jump gives the writers the perfect opportunity to reset. Obviously, new parenthood will be difficult, but the couple can go through the usual daily-life struggles in Virgin River season 8 instead of life-shaking traumas.
