A shark has been spotted in a Sydney suburb more than 20 kilometres away from water.

The dead animal was found on a roundabout at Fairway Drive and Stone Mason Drive in Kellyville around 6.15am today.

The nearest beaches, which include Dee Why, South Curl Curl and Narrabeen Beach, are about an hour away by car.

Police attended the scene and removed the shark from the roadway.

A blurred photo of the carcass was shared to The Hills Police Area Command’s Facebook page.

“Interesting call this morning about a shark sighting – 20km inland at Fairway Drive Kellyville,” the caption read.

“Not sure how this shark ended up here?”

The image was posted alongside a tongue-in-cheek screenshot of a post from the Dorsal Shark Reports – Australia Facebook page, which appeared to show a shark sighting report for the animal at Kellyville.

Many Australians have been using the Dorsal app, website and social media pages to track shark sightings in the wake of another recent wave of attacks.

There were several high-profile encounters in NSW waters last month, including one that tragically claimed the life of 12-year-old Nico Antic.

A fresh warning was issued for Sydney and wider NSW on Saturday after a deluge of rain.
