A Chinese national has been jailed over a car meet accident that left a teenage girl fighting for life.
Chun Lai Yuen, 25, was driving a Honda Civic at more than double the speed limit when he struck pedestrian Caitlyn Dickson, 17, outside Crown Casino in Burswood, Perth.
Dickson had been trying to cross Camfield Dr on foot just before 10pm on July 14 when she was thrown metres into the air.
Yuen previously pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and on Wednesday was sentenced in the Perth Magistrates Court to one year and four months behind bars.
The court was told he was driving at 85km/h in a 40km/h zone when he hit the teen, and that the collision would have been fatal if not for quick medical intervention.
“If it wasn’t for those off duty responders being there it would have been a different outcome,” the victim’s mother said outside court.
“I’m truly grateful to them otherwise she wouldn’t be here.”

Yuen cried as the facts were read out to the court and the magistrate accepted that he was genuinely remorseful.
“I’m grateful that he’s been held accountable for his actions,” Dickson’s mother said.
“It’s been a long time coming.”
Footage of the shocking incident was shared widely on social media at the time.
When asked if the 16-month sentence was long enough, Dickson’s mum said: “Not really”.
“My daughter’s got to deal with a lot of things, and she’s got life threatening injuries still,” she said.
Yuen will be eligible for parole after serving eight months.
