Tech billionaire Elon Musk, founder of Tesla, has just unveiled a bold vision that extends far beyond current goals for car production or factory robots: The Optimus humanoid robot will be mass-produced to close the gap in access to high-quality medical care worldwide.

In a recent conversation with investor Ron Baron, Musk argued that the biggest challenge facing the global healthcare system is not cost, but the scarcity of skilled specialists and surgeons. “There is only a limited number of top surgeons and specialists,” he emphasized, “and they don’t grow on trees.” This is a crucial bottleneck faced even by wealthy nations.
According to Musk, Optimus will eliminate this constraint entirely. He envisions a future where Tesla factories produce millions of medical robots with precision superior to humans. “Optimus will achieve superhuman accuracy,” he affirmed, capable of performing delicate procedures, even surgeries that human hands cannot handle due to difficulty. This promises to democratize access to “the best surgeons” regardless of geography or income.
To achieve this goal, Tesla has announced that the next version of the Optimus robot hand will use approximately $\approx 50$ actuators, a significant improvement intended to provide the refined dexterity necessary for high-precision operations.
However, experts remain cautious. While Optimus is making strides in factory tasks, the path to the operating room is fraught with difficulty. Massive regulatory hurdles (from the FDA), complex ethical issues, and the absolute requirement for reliability are formidable obstacles. Nevertheless, this vision once again affirms Musk’s characteristic style: daring to bet big and challenging every limit to reshape the future.
