The disappearance of the British girl Madeleine McCann in 2007 has entered a new, more intense phase of investigation, following the German authorities’ disclosure of “horrifying” content found on a hard drive belonging to the prime suspect, Christian Brueckner. Although no one has ever been charged in the nearly two-decade-old case, the newly revealed evidence strongly supports the German police’s stance on Madeleine’s fate.
The Buried Hard Drive: Haunting Evidence
The disturbing messages were found on an 80GB hard drive, seized by police during a 2016 search of Brueckner’s residence. According to reports by The Sun and the Channel 4 network, the hard drive was discovered in a burial area, placed underneath his deceased dog.
The contents reportedly included a “horrifying” Skype chat, in which Brueckner (now 48) allegedly expressed a desire to “capture something small and use it for days.”
Even more alarming, the hard drive contained writings allegedly authored by Brueckner, detailing sick fantasies about drugging a young girl and her mother outside of a preschool before abusing the child.
Items that Raise Serious Alarm

In addition to the digital content, the 2016 search also yielded highly disturbing physical items, including:
75 swimsuits intended for adolescent girls.
Photographs depicting child abuse.
Sources indicate that the information extracted from this hard drive led police to the conclusion that Madeleine McCann is deceased.
Case Context and Investigative Development
Madeleine, who would have turned 22 next week, vanished on May 3, 2007, just days before her fourth birthday. She was left alone with her two-year-old twin siblings in the family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, dined at a nearby restaurant.
Initially, the McCann family themselves were considered suspects after forensic tests revealed traces of Madeleine’s blood in a car they rented 25 days after her disappearance. However, more than a decade later, authorities shifted their focus to Christian Brueckner, officially naming him the primary suspect.
In 2020, prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters of the Braunschweig Public Prosecutor’s Office, who was leading the Brueckner investigation, stated to CNN that they “actually have findings that suggest that he is Madeleine McCann’s murderer.” However, Wolters also lamented that they had “insufficient evidence to convict” Brueckner of Madeleine’s kidnapping and murder.
It was not until 2022 that German and Portuguese authorities officially announced they had an “official” suspect, though they did not explicitly name Brueckner. Further searches of his property continued, leading to the discovery of a wallet containing six USB sticks and two memory cards buried under the dog’s remains.
Criminal History and Current Legal Status
Brueckner’s history is marred by sexual abuse charges, including against children. He was first charged with committing sexual offenses against children in 1993 and was later extradited from Portugal to Germany in 2017, where he served 17 months in prison for sexually abusing a child.
He was later sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in 2005. Brueckner is expected to be released from prison in September 2025.
Despite the slim hope after 18 years, Gerry McCann shared: “The hope is not extinguished. We need to find out what’s happened to her.”
