Two people aged in their 60s have drowned at an unpatrolled beach at Shellharbour.

Members of the public pulled the man and woman from the water at Shellharbour Beach, Shell Cove but they died at the scene.

Two people have drowned at an unpatrolled beach south of Wollongong, in the New South Wales Illawarra region.

New South Wales Police have confirmed a 66-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman were swimming at Shellharbour Beach on Boollawarroo Parade at Shell Cove when they came into trouble after 11am.

Emergency service crews are at the scene and police have established privacy tents.

Relatives of the pair were present at the beach at the time.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
