A World W@r II film has just returned to Amazon Prime, leaving audiences stunned by a remarkable historical portrayal

A “masterpiece” World War 2 film about Britain’s historic battle against Nazi Germany is streaming now in the UK. Darkest Hour (2017) focuses on war-time UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill (played by Gary Oldman), and his efforts to galvanise the British people with attacks on the homeland by Adolf Hitler’s forces looming.

Faced with growing voices within his cabinet calling for negotiation with Hitler’s regime, Churchill must convince colleagues and general public that they’re fighting for the very future of Western civilisation. The all-star cast also includes Kristin Scott Thomas as Churchill’s wife and confidante Clementine, Lily James, Stephen Dillane, Ronald Pickup, and Ben Mendelsohn. It was directed by Joe Wright from a screenplay by Anthony McCarten. The film was critically acclaimed, with particular praise for Oldman’s transformation into the cigar smoking statesman.

Oldman won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance, with Kazu Hiro, David Malinowski, and Lucy Sibbick also getting a gong for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Fans have flocked to review aggregator sites like Rotten Tomatoes to laud the biopic, with one writing: “The greatest performance from one of the greatest living actors. Oldman is unbelievable, the story riveting, and important. I learned a lot and I am a history junkie. A masterpiece.”

Another wrote: “Gary Oldman gives an absolutely outstanding performance as Winston Churchill. This movie did a great job showing an important period in the beginning of the war & Oldman carries the film amazingly.

“Lily James also quietly gave a great effort as well.”

A third added: “Whilst the historical accuracy of some aspects of the plot has been questioned, this is undoubtedly a fine movie and Oldman in particular has, rightly, been singled out for praises and awards.

“Surely his best performance to date and possible the best screen rendition of Churchill we have seen.”

A fourth wrote: “I found Oldman as Churchill, stunning. Other actors have the captured the grim resolute side of Churchill as did Oldman.

“But Oldman captured the teddy bear petulant child in the man as well. Oldman has set the “Churchill bar” almost impossibly high for future actors.”

The film has a strong 83% score on the site’s Popcornmeter, reflecting the percentage of users who rated the film 3.5 stars or higher.

It’s also Certified Fresh with a 84% score based on reviews from critics approved by Rotten Tomatoes.
