A woman has drowned at a popular tourist swimming spot near Alice Springs.

Authorities were alerted that CPR was being performed on a 25-year-old woman at Ellery Creek Big Hole about 12.50pm on Sunday.

Paramedics took over resuscitation efforts when they arrived however the woman could not be saved.

Police have warned visitors to the waterhole to be careful around waterways and follow safety advice in remote locations.

The area has been closed to the public while police investigate what happened.

Ellery Creek Big Hole is a popular camping, swimming and picnic spot in the Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park.

It is located about an hour west of Alice Springs.
