At the heart of country music history lies a bond between legends Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson. Though friends for decades, they only ever recorded one duet together—“Lay Me Down” in 2016. The song, a hauntingly peaceful reflection on mortality and spiritual release, became even more meaningful following Loretta’s passing in 2022.
And then, something magical happened.
At Loretta Lynn’s public memorial service, held on October 30, 2022 at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, her granddaughter Emmy Russell and Willie’s son Lukas Nelson stepped onto the stage. What followed was more than a tribute — it was a moment that felt divinely orchestrated.
“Lay Me Down” — A Song of Peace, A Performance of Grace
As Emmy and Lukas began their rendition of Lay Me Down, the room was still. With just piano, guitar, and their voices, they breathed new life into the beloved duet. The lyrics, “When they lay me down someday, my soul will rise, then fly away…” rang out through the Opry, rising like a prayer.
The audience, both in person and those watching via CMT’s live broadcast, was visibly moved. Goosebumps. Tears. Silence. That’s how powerful the performance was.
CMT later described the duet as “emotional and unforgettable,” and nominated it for CMT Performance of the Year in 2023.
A Legacy of Love and Faith

While walking the red carpet for the award show, Emmy Russell shared the most treasured advice Loretta ever gave her:
“The most advice that she has given me throughout the years was to love God,” Emmy said. “She was such a lover of God, and I think it was more of, ‘Listen to Him and follow His voice.’”
It’s a sentiment that echoes not only through her music but in the way Emmy carries herself—quiet strength, deep faith, and undeniable talent.
Since then, Emmy has continued to honor her grandmother’s legacy in her own voice. She competed on Season 22 of American Idol and made it all the way to the Top 5, winning over audiences with her authenticity and artistry.
Two Generations, One Timeless Song
For many, the duet between Lukas and Emmy felt like the passing of a musical torch. While Loretta and Willie gifted the world with the original “Lay Me Down,” it was their children who reminded everyone why the song still matters—because grief, love, and the longing for peace are timeless.
