john Foster’s journey on American Idol continues to capture hearts across the country, and Monday night’s performance only solidified his place as one of the season’s brightest young stars. The 18-year-old from Addis, Louisiana has charmed both judges and viewers alike, building momentum week after week with his mix of authenticity, faith, and sheer vocal talent. Now a member of the Top 5 alongside Thunderstorm Artis, Slater Nalley, Breanna Nix, and Jamal Roberts, Foster is fighting for a coveted spot in the Top 3 — and he’s making quite the case.
For the second night of Disney-themed performances, Foster brought infectious energy to “The Bare Necessities” from The Jungle Book, putting his own spin on the classic tune. With a laid-back swagger and bright charisma, he quickly had the crowd on their feet. Carrie Underwood praised him for taking a fun song and making it uniquely his, calling the performance “just a good time.” Lionel Richie pointed to Foster’s undeniable appeal, saying, “You’ve got likability. A lot of people think it’s just about singing, but they’ve got to like you!” Luke Bryan agreed, complimenting his overall package: “You’ve got a thing, you’ve got a look, you’ve got a sound.”
This performance followed Sunday night’s appearance where Foster paid tribute to his Louisiana roots with “Almost There” from The Princess and the Frog, another Disney classic. That performance, too, earned rave reviews, with Bryan summarizing it in just three words: “Charisma, charisma, charisma.” Underwood added that no matter what he sings, Foster always brings himself to the performance. “John Foster is John Foster,” she said, reinforcing the consistency that’s made him a fan favorite.
In one of the evening’s most emotional moments, Foster dedicated his Mother’s Day performance to his mom, choosing the Brooks & Dunn ballad “Believe.” Explaining his choice, he shared that the song represents the foundation of faith that his mother helped build in his life. “My prime faith is Christianity, and my mom has built that over so many years. I am so eternally grateful,” he told Parade. The performance struck a chord with the judges — and especially with his mother, who was spotted wiping away tears in the audience while holding a sign that read, “I believe in you, son.”
As Foster continues to rise in the competition, his life has already begun to change in dramatic ways. Speaking with NOLA.com, the LSU student admitted that fame still feels surreal, especially after being recognized at Disneyland. “Never in a million years did I think I’d ever be recognized in Disneyland,” he said, marveling at how far the Idol experience has taken him. “Sure, I can see somebody recognizing me in, like, Louisiana or Texas or something, but Disneyland in California was not somewhere that I ever thought I’d be recognized in. And sure enough, many people recognized me, which was crazy.”
From singing country ballads that move his mom to tears to lighting up the stage with Disney joy, John Foster continues to prove he’s more than a contestant — he’s a storyteller with heart, a voice with soul, and a presence that’s impossible to ignore.
