Jamal Roberts Brings the Church to Tears with Soul-Stirring “Lord Do It for Me” Performance
When Jamal Roberts took the stage at Union Grove Baptist Church, his rendition of “Lord Do It for Me” was more than a performance — it was a personal prayer, sung from the depths of his soul. Every note carried the weight of faith, perseverance, and purpose. As his voice echoed through the church’s vaulted ceilings, the Mississippi native created a moment that felt sacred. Congregants swayed, eyes closed, hands raised — united in the power of Jamal’s voice and the Spirit it invoked.
That performance was just one example of why America fell in love with him.
An ‘American Idol’ Journey Years in the Making
Crowned Season 23 winner of American Idol on May 18, 2025, Jamal Roberts didn’t take the easy road to success. In a heartfelt interview on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, Jamal opened up about his journey: three Idol auditions, a run on BET’s Sunday Best, and years of balancing music with a teaching job and family life.
“I was rejected twice,” Jamal shared. “It got disappointing, but it gave me the fuel to press on.”
That resilience paid off, not only winning him the title but making history as the first Black male winner since Ruben Studdard in 2003, and earning the most votes in a season finale in the show’s history.
Faith, Family, and Staying Grounded
After the win, instead of rushing off to a press tour or the studio, Jamal returned to his students — wrapping up the school year and embracing the joy of everyday life. A devoted girl dad, he says the highlight for his daughters wasn’t necessarily seeing their dad on national TV, but getting to go to Disneyland afterward.
Jamal credits his grandfather’s faith as the guiding force behind his own. It’s that spiritual grounding that has become a defining part of his artistry — clearly present in emotional performances like “Lord Do It for Me” and his standout cover of “Tennessee Whiskey” that stunned Idol judges.
What’s Next for Jamal Roberts?
While fans are buzzing about a possible Netflix documentary, Jamal was quick to shut down the speculation:
“If you didn’t hear it from me, it ain’t true.”
What is confirmed, however, is that Jamal is continuing to work on new music and plans to stay true to his gospel and soul roots. He’s also headlining a free concert at the Boxcar Willie Stage on June 14 during the 2025 Bee More Summer Festival in Atmore. The event kicks off at noon, with Jamal expected to take the stage at 4 p.m. following a full afternoon of food, family-friendly activities, and live music.
Jamal Roberts: A Voice of Purpose
Jamal’s win is more than just a title — it’s a triumph of faith, grit, and authenticity. His story resonates with anyone who’s ever faced rejection and kept going. Whether he’s lifting spirits in a church pew or commanding a national stage, Jamal Roberts sings with a purpose that can’t be manufactured. And if his American Idol journey was any indication, he’s only just begun to show the world what he can do.
