For nearly three decades, the murder of Christopher Wallace — better known as The Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls — has haunted hip-hop. Shot to death at just 24 years old, his unsolved killing sparked conspiracy theories, rivalries, and endless speculation. Now, in 2025, the truth has finally come out — and it’s darker than many imagined.
The Night Biggie Was Killed
On March 8, 1997, Los Angeles buzzed with celebrity energy. The Soul Train Music Awards had just ended, and stars flocked to Vibe magazine’s afterparty at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Biggie, in town to promote his upcoming double album Life After Death, attended with his close friend Sean “Puffy” Combs.
The mood was festive. Biggie laughed with fans and posed for photos. But shortly after midnight, his convoy of SUVs left the party. At a red light on Fairfax Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard, a black Chevy Impala pulled alongside. A gunman opened fire. Four bullets struck Biggie, who was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m.
The murder happened in front of witnesses, yet the shooter disappeared into the night.
A Feud Written in Blood
Biggie’s murder came just six months after Tupac Shakur was killed in Las Vegas. Both deaths looked like mirror images: young rap superstars gunned down in drive-by shootings. Fans didn’t believe it was coincidence.
The East Coast–West Coast feud had already divided the rap world. Once close friends, Tupac and Biggie’s relationship shattered after Tupac was shot in 1994 at Quad Studios in New York. Suspicious that Biggie and Puffy knew more than they admitted, Tupac turned bitter, later releasing the infamous diss track Hit ‘Em Up.
By 1996, the rivalry between Bad Boy Records and Death Row Records dominated headlines. When Tupac was murdered in September, whispers of revenge followed Biggie until his own death six months later.
Investigations, Corruption, and Cover-Ups
Despite the high profile of the case, no arrests were made. The LAPD’s investigation quickly unraveled amid claims of incompetence, missing evidence, and rumors of internal corruption. Journalists and insiders alleged that rogue officers may have been tied to Death Row Records.
Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, along with Faith Evans, later filed lawsuits accusing the LAPD of covering up evidence. Both cases were dismissed before reaching trial. The FBI briefly stepped in but also dropped its investigation. For decades, the case went cold, leaving fans convinced that the truth was being buried.
Suspects and Theories
Speculation swirled around several names. Death Row co-founder Suge Knight was suspected of ordering the hit. Former LAPD officer David Mack, convicted in an unrelated bank robbery, was tied to theories about the black Impala. Amir Muhammad, a friend of Mack’s, was even identified by some witnesses as the shooter, though never charged.
Others floated wild conspiracy theories, even suggesting Puffy himself, though no evidence ever supported those claims.
Documentaries like Biggie & Tupac (2002) and Unsolved (2018) fueled speculation but offered no closure.
The Breakthrough in 2025
The case turned when retired LAPD detective Greg Kading revealed new findings. Originally part of a joint task force in the late 2000s, Kading interviewed informants and uncovered testimony that pointed to Wardell “Poochie” Fouse, a member of the Mob Piru Bloods and a close associate of Suge Knight.
According to Kading, Suge Knight — jailed at the time — ordered the hit as retaliation for Tupac’s death. Using a girlfriend as an intermediary, Knight allegedly arranged payment and gave instructions for Biggie’s murder. Fouse carried out the shooting, but he himself was murdered in 2003, ending any chance of prosecution.
By 2025, Kading’s findings are widely accepted as the definitive answer: Biggie was killed by Poochie Fouse on Suge Knight’s orders.
Why No Justice?
Despite the case being “solved,” no arrests were made. With Fouse dead, there is no living trigger man to prosecute. Suge Knight remains in prison on an unrelated conviction, and key witnesses have refused to testify in court.
Authorities have also been reluctant to reopen the case, as doing so would shine a light on LAPD corruption scandals from the 1990s. Officially, the case remains open, but insiders admit it is effectively closed.
The Legacy of Biggie Smalls
On March 18, 1997, thousands filled Brooklyn’s streets for Biggie’s funeral procession. His death was mourned worldwide, but his music ensured his legacy would endure.
Life After Death, released just weeks later, became one of the most acclaimed rap albums in history. His earlier album Ready to Die cemented him as one of hip-hop’s greatest storytellers. In 2020, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognition of his enduring influence.
Today, his children CJ and T’yanna Wallace help preserve his legacy. His lyrics still echo through speakers, his name still revered as the “King of New York.”
After 28 years, the mystery has been solved. But justice — at least in the courtroom — never came. Instead, Biggie’s legacy lives in his art, his city, and the millions who still celebrate his music.
