Even legends have to listen when the doctor says sit down.
Dolly Parton was missing from her own stage this week, and for good reason. The 79-year-old icon was supposed to be in Pigeon Forge on September 17 to unveil Dollywood‘s new Night Flight Expedition ride, but instead, she delivered the news through a video message filmed from home. The reason was a painful kidney stone that led to an infection, forcing her to stay put under the doctor’s orders.
“Hello Dollywood! It’s me,” she said with her trademark smile. “I know, I’m here and you’re there, and you’re wondering why that is. Well, I had a little problem.” She went on to explain that the kidney stone had sidelined her. “The doctor said, ‘You don’t need to be traveling right this minute. You need a few days to get better.’ So he suggested I not go to Dollywood today, but I’m there with you in spirit.”
Her absence did not stop Dollywood from teasing its new thrill ride, a one-of-a-kind experience launching next year that promises to take visitors on a heart-pounding journey through the Smoky Mountains after dark. But no Dollywood event ever feels quite the same without Dolly herself lighting up the crowd, and her recorded message reminded everyone that while the Queen of Country can be sidelined by health, her spirit still hangs over the park she built.
The timing of this health scare comes in a year already heavy with loss and resilience for Parton. Just six months ago, her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, passed away after a private battle with illness. Since then, Dolly has balanced mourning with an unrelenting schedule while launching a Nashville stage musical about her life, preparing for a Las Vegas residency, and working on new music. But in true Dolly fashion, she has also admitted she has had to pause some creative projects because the grief still runs too deep. “I can’t afford the luxury of getting that emotional right now,” she explained on a podcast earlier this year. “There are times like that, things like that, that will stall you a little bit. But I’ll write something else though, if it comes.”
Despite her setback, Dolly made sure to reassure everyone that this was not a dire situation. “I’ll be back as quick as I can. Don’t worry about me, I’m going to be okay. Just can’t do it today,” she told Dollywood visitors. Her words carried both comfort and that trademark grit, the same combination that has defined her for decades.
It is worth remembering that Dollywood itself is part of Dolly’s legacy of perseverance. What began as a small amusement park in the Smokies has grown into one of the top attractions in the country, with each new expansion carrying her fingerprints. The Night Flight Expedition is the next step in Dollywood’s five-hundred-million-dollar growth plan, proving that even when Dolly cannot be there in person, her vision keeps the park soaring higher.
For an artist who has spent her career embodying the balance between strength and vulnerability, this moment is just another reminder of why Dolly Parton remains larger than life. She can be sidelined by pain, but she will not be silenced. From her living room to the Dollywood stage, she is still guiding the show even if she has to miss a beat or two to take care of herself.
And when she does return to Dollywood, you can bet the roar of that crowd will remind her just how much her people have been waiting for her to step back under those Smoky Mountain lights.
