BBC Breakfast’s Carol Kirkwood details unexpected issue during trip with husband
BBC Breakfast’s weather presenter Carol Kirkwood planned a romantic trip to Italy with her husband, Steve Randall, but it didn’t quite go to plan
BBC Breakfast star Carol Kirkwood says an unexpected issue during her trip to Italy’s Venice with her husband Steve Randall “changed things”. The meteorologist has been delivering weather updates on the morning programme for 28 years, and continues to thrive in her position.
In a twist of irony however, Carol explained how and Steve’s holiday was completely spoiled by her failure to examine the weather conditions beforehand. Writing in her Woman’s Weekly magazine column, she revealed: “My husband Steve and I decided on a romantic weekend escape to Venice.
“Gondolas, candlelit dinners, the works. What could possibly go wrong? Well, firstly, I didn’t check the weather forecast. Unbelievably, it poured the whole time. I’d packed a long, woolly coat, not exactly ideal in a downpour.”
The 63-year-old claimed that her garments had become “so soggy” during the rain that she “could have been wrung out like a dishcloth”.
“My shoes were no better, I was squelching through St Mark’s Square and I ended up buying one of those plastic ponchos,” she remembered.

Carol said at the time of the trip, she wasn’t scheduled to be presenting the weather, so therefore wasn’t up to date with the latest forecast.
“Safe to say, that trip changed things,” she added to the publication. “Now, I never go anywhere without checking the forecast – twice.”
Carol married her second husband Steve in Buckinghamshire back in 2023.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast viewers shortly after their big day, she shared: “It was the most perfect and romantic and intimate wedding. We are both so incredibly happy.”
In a previous interview with Prima Magazine, Carol couldn’t help but gush about her husband, who she referred to as “the best thing that’s ever happened to me, without a shadow of a doubt”.
She added: “He always makes me a cup of tea before I go to work in the morning, which is very romantic – it’s 2.45am!

“And he often leaves me a little love note for when I come home from work. That, to me, is worth a million red roses.”
Carol was previously married to property developer Jimmy Kirkwood, from 1990 to 2008.
In a rare admission about their separation on Kaye Adams’ How To Be 60 podcast, she said it sparked her “hardest year” yet.
“Probably the year I got divorced, I didn’t expect that to happen and it was shocking,” the presenter shared. “It was pretty devastating at the time, but it led to better things after that.
“I think that was probably the hardest year, that or when my dad died. I was very close to my dad and he died when I was quite young and he was the apple of my eye so either of these two. For different reasons.”
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
