Utah governor says suspect in Charlie Kirk assassination is not cooperating with authorities.

The 22-year-old suspect accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk is “not cooperating” with authorities, according to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and two law enforcement sources.

Speaking on several Sunday morning news programs, Cox emphasized that investigators are still working to determine a motive for the attack and said more details could emerge when the suspect, Tyler Robinson, appears in court on Tuesday.

“There’s so much more that we’re learning, and so much more that we will learn,” Cox told CNN’s State of the Union. “Official charges will be filed on Tuesday, and there will be much more evidence and information available then. We are interviewing all kinds of people—everyone who knows him—to understand what that motive actually was.”

Kirk, 31, co-founded the right-wing advocacy group Turning Point USA and was a close confidant of former President Donald Trump. He was shot and killed Wednesday while addressing a large crowd at an outdoor debate at Utah Valley University. He is survived by his wife, Erika, and their two young children.

Robinson was arrested Friday on charges of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, according to an inmate booking sheet from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities have described the shooting as a “targeted attack,” which drew condemnation across the political spectrum.

Cox, a Republican who has urged both sides to tone down inflammatory rhetoric following the attack, said, “I really don’t have a dog in this fight. If this was a radicalized MAGA person, I’d be saying that as well.”

The governor added that investigations revealed Robinson held left-leaning political beliefs and harbored animosity toward Kirk.

“That information comes from people around him, his family members, and friends,” Cox explained on CNN. He also noted that the suspect’s partner is transgender, though he was uncertain if that detail is relevant to the case.

“The roommate was a romantic partner, a male transitioning to female,” Cox said. “I can say this partner has been incredibly cooperative and had no idea this was happening.”

State records indicate Robinson is registered as an unaffiliated voter and has been inactive, having not voted in the last two elections. He was too young to vote in 2020.

Robinson has no prior felony or misdemeanor convictions and no history of violent offenses, according to a Public Safety Assessment Report filed in Utah state court.

Raised in St. George in southwestern Utah, Robinson became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at a young age, a church spokesperson told the Associated Press.

Ammunition found with the weapon used to kill Kirk was engraved with taunting messages referencing anti-fascist sentiment and meme culture. Court records indicate that one bullet casing bore the inscription: “Hey, fascist! Catch!”
