Norris Takes Sprint Pole as Hamilton Falls in SQ2 and Verstappen Battles “Undriveable” Red Bull in Brazil

Lando Norris claimed sprint pole position in Sao Paulo after dominating all three sessions of sprint qualifying, giving the McLaren driver the perfect start to a crucial weekend in his championship campaign. Norris consistently outpaced team-mate Oscar Piastri and showed superior pace throughout, setting himself up to extend his title lead in Saturday’s sprint race.
While Norris shone, Lewis Hamilton suffered a frustrating elimination in SQ2, finishing 11th in his Ferrari after his final attempt was hindered by team-mate Charles Leclerc spinning ahead of him at Turn 10. The moment destroyed Hamilton’s final lap and left him unable to progress into the final shootout.
Hamilton briefly faced an investigation for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags triggered by Leclerc’s spin. Stewards later issued a reprimand rather than a penalty, citing the extremely short visibility of the yellow signal and noting that Hamilton had hesitated before accelerating. The decision allowed him to retain 11th, though it offered little comfort after a session he believed had much more potential.
For Norris, the day unfolded in stark contrast. The Briton topped SQ1, SQ2, and SQ3, each time with a comfortable margin over his rivals. He described the session as “tougher than I would have liked,” but expressed satisfaction at securing the result McLaren needed.
“It was a little bit tougher than I would have liked,” Norris said. “But we did the job we needed to do, which was to be fastest today. Qualifying here is always one of the best things — it’s difficult, bumpy, tricky, but always a joy and always puts a smile on your face.”

He added that despite the strong start, a long weekend still lay ahead: “Another qualifying and another couple of races to go, but it’s a good start.”
Oscar Piastri, who has endured two challenging weekends in the United States and Mexico, secured second place and praised the team’s progress, despite a few nervy moments early in the session.
“A couple of big moments on my first lap, which wasn’t ideal,” Piastri said. “That was a shame. But ultimately I felt much happier than the last couple of weeks. We can definitely fight with what we’ve got and there are a lot more points on Sunday.”

His improved pace gave McLaren their second front-row lockout in sprint qualifying this season.
Norris now has the opportunity to extend his championship advantage, with eight points available to the sprint winner, seven for second place, and so on down to eighth. With his main rivals starting further back, Saturday’s sprint could be pivotal in the title fight.
Max Verstappen endured a difficult session, qualifying only fifth after describing his Red Bull as “undriveable.” The three-time world champion complained of severe vibration, poor grip and a lack of confidence in both the front and rear of the car.
“A lot of vibration in the car, a lot of ride problems. Not what we want,” Verstappen said. “We also don’t have the grip — we can’t get the car to turn but at the same time can’t really rely on the rear. For us, quite poor, I would say.”
Verstappen added that he did not expect conditions to improve even if the forecasted rain arrived for the grand prix qualifying session, which is due to begin at 18:00 GMT. The changing weather could, however, provide an unpredictable twist to what is already a competitive weekend.
Among the standout performers was Mercedes junior Kimi Antonelli, who took second place in SQ1 with an impressive opening lap and ultimately secured a strong position relative to his machinery. His early-session pace once again demonstrated the talent that has drawn interest across the paddock.
The surprise of the day, however, was veteran Fernando Alonso. Driving a midfield Aston Martin, Alonso set the fastest time in SQ2 and finished just 0.253 seconds off Norris’ pole time in the final session. It marked one of his strongest qualifying displays of the season.
“Car felt good in P1. We were P4. Now we are P5, so it seems like we started the weekend in the window of operation,” Alonso said. “With only one free practice, if you start with the right foot, everything becomes easier.”
As teams prepare for the sprint and look toward the grand prix qualifying session later in the day, the unpredictable Brazilian weather remains a looming factor. Clouds gathered over Interlagos throughout the afternoon, raising the possibility of disruptions that could alter the competitive order.
For now, Norris and McLaren hold the advantage, Hamilton is left to recover after a compromised session, and Verstappen faces a long night of setup work. With both a sprint and full grand prix still ahead, the stage is set for a dramatic weekend in Sao Paulo.
