Aston Martin have revealed that two rookies will feature in FP1, with Jak Crawford due to drive Lance Stroll’s AMR25 in the session.
As part of the F1 regulations, teams must hand each of their cars to a rookie in two FP1 sessions throughout the season. Alonso’s replacement, Shields, is currently competing in Formula Two and has already accumulated over 500km in Formula One TPC machinery this year. He also has extensive experience in the simulator.
Ahead of the Abu Dhabi GP, Aston Martin chief engineer F1 evolution, Gerry Hughes, explained: “Cian has worked closely with our team throughout the year, building mileage in AMR TPC Formula One machinery and deepening his understanding of the AMR25 through a structured simulator programme.
“His feedback and professionalism have been consistently strong, and he has continued to develop with every opportunity.
“This upcoming FP1 session is a fantastic way to round out the year, putting the knowledge and experience he has gained to good use for the team at the final race of the season.”
And Shields added: “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to drive in FP1 with Aston Martin Aramco. I’ve learned so much working with the team this year, both in the simulator and through my TPC testing, and to now be trusted with the AMR25 on a Grand Prix weekend is a huge moment for me.
“I’m looking forward to contributing to the programme on Friday and making the most of the experience.”

Aston Martin have endured a tough season on the track, with the team currently seventh in the Constructors’ Championship standings ahead of the final race of the year.
Alonso finds himself 12th in the Drivers’ Championship standings after accumulating 48 points across the campaign but could climb the leaderboard in Abu Dhabi as he is only one point behind Sauber star Nico Hulkenberg and just three points adrift of Racing Bulls ace Isack Hadjar.
Meanwhile, his team-mate Stroll will go into the season finale in 17th position in the pecking order, with the Canadian level on points with Haas driver Esteban Ocon.
The first practice session will take place on Friday ahead of qualifying on Saturday. And the main event is scheduled for Sunday. McLaren star Lando Norris leads the standings ahead of the Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri also in the running to win the title in the Middle East.
