Deadly head-on crash near Shark Bay kills two
Heartbreaking details have emerged about a deadly crash in Western Australia.
The victims, a family, were heading to Broome on a caravan trip when they crashed on the North West Coastal Hwy at Hamelin Pool, near Shark Bay, about 11.30am.
A 60-year-old grandfather was killed, and his 12-year-old grandson was critically injured.
The boy’s grandmother was also seriously injured in the crash and remains in hospital, according to a GoFundMe organised to support the family.
She and her grandson were flown to Jandakot Airport by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and transferred to Royal Perth Hospital, and Perth Children’s Hospital, respectively.
The family had been in a RAM ute which was towing a caravan when it crashed head-on with a Toyota Landcruiser.
The 45-year-old driver of the Toyota was also killed in the crash, and paramedics assessed another four injured people.
“On route to what was meant to be a memorable family holiday to Broome ended in unimaginable tragedy,” Jasmin Wythes said in a GoFundMe organised to raise funds for the boy’s recovery, and pay tribute to his grandfather.
“On their journey north, they were involved in a devastating crash that claimed the life of a much loved father, grandfather and partner.”
Wythes said on Wednesday that the boy remained in a critical condition.
“We are putting everything behind him and his family for a safe and positive recovery,” she said.
“No family should have to endure the pain of losing a loved one whilst also facing unknown time in hospital, rehabilitation and financial uncertainty.
“Please keep … his family in your thoughts during this heartbreaking time.”
Western Australia has recorded 133 road deaths in 2026, the highest number for this point in the year in more than a decade.
Premier Roger Cook said the government will continue to invest in road infrastructure safety projects and education programs for the community.
“Another horrific event on Western Australian roads and another community, another family, more friends that are impacted by deaths on our roads and it’s incredibly sad,” he said.
“Our hearts go out to the families and friends and the community involved.
“Our thanks and appreciation goes to the first responders.”
