Sitcom The Middle has jumped up the Netflix UK charts after being added to the streamer. The US sitcom originally aired for nine seasons between 2009 and 2018, and follows the lives of the lower middle class Heck family in Indiana.

The ABC show recently landed for viewers in the UK, and has quickly proved a hit – currently sitting at the number five spot ahead of shows such as Bridgerton and Love Is Blind.

The series starred Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Patricia Heaton, Scrubs‘ Neil Flynn, Unbelievable‘s Charlie McDermott, Jane the Virgin‘s Eden Sher and Frankenweenie‘s Atticus Shaffer.

Viewers have heaped praise on The Middle, one on IMDb calling it an “underrated show of brilliance” that has “sadly never really gained the wider acclaim it deserves”.

Another similarly labelled it a “very underrated, innocent family comedy”, adding: “I’ve been watching since day 1 and have loved it since.”

Digital Spy also called it “US TV’s most underrated comedy” back in 2014, with Flynn speaking to us at the time about the show’s underappreciated status.

“I don’t long for attention myself, I feel content that the show is on the air and has success and people seem to like it and I think there is a danger in calling yourself underrated,” he said.

“It was the same with Scrubs. It was never a smash hit and I’m okay with that. I think when you’re on the cover of magazines and the water cooler topic of conversations I think it can only go down.”

Following the show’s conclusion, a spin-off focused on character Sue was in the works, though it was ultimately canned after ABC decided to not move forward with it.

Meanwhile, in 2018, co-creator Eileen Heisler teased the possibility of the main show returning in the future, telling Deadline: “Our ratings have been great and ABC was very clear they did want more seasons – it was our decision to bring it to a close. And hey… I can’t tell you what’s next… gotta save it for the reboot. See you in 10 years!”
