own-to-earth and hilarious, Kathryn Newton was a joy when HELLO! caught up with her at the London premiere of her brilliantly gory new horror flick, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.

After quizzing her about her new role in the sequel to 2019’s smash hit slasher, we couldn’t resist asking Kathryn about one of her most iconic projects, Netflix series The Society, which ended on the mother of all cliffhangers.

Fans (myself included) were left “furious” when the streamer pulled the plug on a second series of the dystopian teen thriller due to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, leaving viewers with dozens of unanswered questions – namely, why the hell did everyone in the town vanish?

“I think about this show at least once a week. I don’t even care if the cast is 20 years older at this point. This show haunts me,” one angry fan wrote on Reddit. Another shared: “I literally cannot sleep at night without having closure from this show. It drives me INSANE that there weren’t answers to anything, and that we’ll probably never get them!!”

Kathryn, 29, joked that nine times out of ten when she’s stopped on the street, it’s for her role as reluctant leader Allie Pressman in the cult 2019 teen drama.

There’s good news for disappointed fans, however, as the actress revealed the door is open for a comeback if Netflix ever comes calling.

“I loved The Society and the cast is iconic. Everyone on that cast, I think we just got lucky. I don’t know what happened,” she said. “Chris Keyser picked a really good group of young actors, and they’re all doing such amazing things.

“So I would do it in a heartbeat. I talk to Chris Keyser all the time, the creator and showrunner. You know what? Anytime, Netflix!”

Wickedly good fun

Kathryn currently stars opposite Samara Weaving in the sequel to 2019’s smash horror hit Ready or Not, playing heroine Grace’s younger sister Faith MacCaullay, who is inadvertently caught up in the evil elite’s new game of hide-and-seek.

The bond between the two actresses as squabbling siblings is the beating heart of the blood-splattered black comedy, and Kathryn says their relationship is just as close in real life.

She enthused: “Samara Weaving is a gift. She’s opened up my heart so much in general and so I wish I was her real sister. I met her real sister the other night in LA and I was like, I wish that was me.”

Paying tribute to her heavily pregnant co-star, she added: “It’s such a shame she couldn’t be here to celebrate this. It’s such a big deal to be in a movie, let alone get a sequel. Trust me, every time it gets good and we’re laughing and smiling, we’re like, ‘Where’s Sam?’”

The film is certainly not for the faint-hearted, with several scenes involving Kathryn being showered in blood explosions, and one particularly nail-biting moment involving a washing machine.

The Scream Queen, who also worked with Radio Silence filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett on Abigail, joked: “I don’t care. In fact, give me more blood.”

Horror finally gets its flowers

Horror is certainly having a moment. Sinners won big at the Oscars earlier this month, including a Best Actor gong for Michael B. Jordan, while Amy Madigan picked up the accolade for Best Supporting Actress in Weapons, marking a major change after incredible horror performances from the likes of Toni Collette have been snubbed in the past.

Kathryn is here for it. “I was so excited for how many wins Sinners has and the horror community. Amy Madigan, too, I was thinking about how cool it was that it was getting recognised.

“A couple of people on Abigail worked on Sinners, so it’s a horror community. When we’re doing the blood canon stuff, these people are technical artists, and for me as an actor the process is the same… It was really cool to see that. Michael B. Jordan, let’s go!”
