Seven years after the death of Nipsey Hussle, the impact of the Los Angeles rapper, entrepreneur, and community figure continues to be felt across the music industry and beyond.
On March 31, 2019, Nipsey Hussle, whose real name was Ermias Asghedom, was fatally shot outside his Marathon Clothing store in South Los Angeles. The shooting occurred in the afternoon, in front of witnesses, at a location that symbolized his commitment to reinvesting in his own neighborhood.

Authorities later identified the suspect as Eric Holder Jr., an individual known to Hussle. According to investigators, the two had a brief interaction prior to the shooting, reportedly involving accusations related to cooperation with law enforcement. Shortly afterward, the suspect returned and opened fire, striking Hussle multiple times. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital at the age of 33.
The suspect was arrested within days of the incident following a widespread manhunt. In 2022, Eric Holder Jr. was convicted of first-degree murder. He was later sentenced to 60 years to life in prison, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that had drawn national attention.
Beyond the circumstances of his death, Nipsey Hussle’s life and work remain central to his legacy. Widely respected for his independent approach to music and business, he was also recognized for his efforts to support economic development in his community. His investments in local businesses and initiatives aimed at empowering underserved neighborhoods distinguished him as more than just a recording artist.
In the days following his death, tributes poured in from fans, fellow musicians, and public figures. Memorials across Los Angeles reflected both grief and recognition of his broader influence. For many, his passing represented not only the loss of an artist but also of a figure committed to long-term change within his community.
Seven years later, Nipsey Hussle is still remembered for the principles he promoted—self-reliance, ownership, and perseverance. His slogan, “The Marathon Continues,” has since become a lasting symbol of his philosophy and enduring impact.
