The catch? They have to be handcuffed in pairs to a person who has completely opposing opinions, beliefs, lifestyles and habits.

The pairs stay in the handcuffs 24/7 in a new twist on the ultimate test of survival.

And yes, this even means when they need to go to the toilet.

In the first episode, which airs on Monday at 9pm, one pair are seen stripping naked and getting in the shower together, just hours after being handcuffed together.

While others find inventive ways to protect their modesty from the stranger next to them, barmaid Tilly and luxury car owner Anthony have no such concerns, and hop into the shower nude.

Speaking about the moment, Anthony said: “It was fine. We actually said if we can’t do this then we can’t do what they’re all going to ask about – lavatorial things. We might as well give up.

“Let’s just pretend we’re six year olds and we’ll just get on with it.”

Tilly added: “Watching other people shower [on the show] they were going all out, they were wearing blindfolds and everything and we were just like [let’s go!].”

The pairs were also given a longer ‘poo chain’ for when they needed to do their absolutions, but Tilly admitted: “After a week we were like, let’s just get on with it!”, and they didn’t bother with that option.

As well as dealing with the practicalities of being handcuffed together around the clock, the pairs will be sent on a road trip across the UK, in the hope they find common ground along the way.

If a pair can last longest chained together, they’ll be in the running for a £100,000 jackpot – but if it proves too much and they demand to be unchained, their shot at the jackpot is gone.

Other pairs include a man who films gay porn and a woman who admits she is a massive prude, a 79-year-old baronet and a retired former prison guard, and a body positive ultra-feminist who is cuffed to a gym-obsessed alpha male.

Speaking about the show, Jonathan, 65, said: “I thought it was a brilliant idea. I was concerned that it would be treated with the right level of sensitivity because you’re dealing with human beings.

“We’ve all grown more and more aware that reality shows it can be a really challenging environment to put people into.

“I wanted to make sure that they were focused on along with actually keeping true to the nature of it.

“I was very conscious that they should be respectful of people as people and make sure that there was the kind of back-up and sensitivity towards that.

“It wasn’t just paid for shock value which it would be easier to do.”

He continued: “Obviously, at the heart of the premise is that they have to be people from different worlds. People with different opinions, people with different views of how to behave and what is right and what is wrong.

“There’s a built-in level of conflict to an extent. I was very concerned that that wouldn’t be too extreme because it would be.

“But there are some extremely different people who actually get together.”

Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing starts tomorrow, Monday, March 2 at 9pm on Channel 4.
