A serious crash near Shark Bay on Monday has killed two people and critically injured a 12-year-old child, who was flown to Perth on an emergency flight with another injured person.
Police from the major crash investigation section are trying to determine the cause of the collision, which occurred on North West Coastal Highway in Hamelin Pool about 11.30am.
A WA Police spokeswoman said “two vehicles, one of which was towing a caravan, collided, causing the caravan to roll”.
“Two people died as a result of the crash,” she said.
“A 12-year-old passenger sustained critical injuries and is being airlifted to Perth for medical treatment.”
St John WA said they transported four people to Monkey Mia airport after they were injured in the crash.
A jet operated by the Royal Flying Doctor Service arrived at the regional airport around 3.15pm.
The flight — carrying the injured child and a seriously injured adult — landed at Jandakot Airport about 5.40pm.
The child was due to arrive at Perth Children’s Hospital and the adult was scheduled to arrive at Royal Perth Hospital on Monday evening.
Josh Osgood, who travelled past the scene minutes after the collision, told The West it was a “sad sight”.
“The vehicles were in a million bits,” he said.
“I saw the guys with a medical bag running over to help (the people involved).
“I hope the kid pulls through.”
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said they assisted in the emergency response.
WA Police have urged the public to avoid the area, with North West Coastal Hwy between Overlander Roadhouse to Billabong Roadhouse closed to the public.
Main Roads WA said “prolonged delays” are expected with travellers urged to seek another route.
